FI questions from the other side; an xB turbo setup

Hey Yarisworld!

So as a fellow 1nz-fe owner, I have repeatedly been told that the repository of much forced induction knowledge for the 1nz lives here.

Here's some pics of my car:

I have modified my box in many many ways, but have not yet started on any performance mods. I recently picked up a used greddy turbo kit with boomslang harness and front mount intercooler setup. It also comes with an AEM FIC for management. Im not looking for crazy numbers and really just want to add it to gain a little pep as well as add another element to my build. I plan to only run 5-6 psi max and from what I understand from everything I've read, stock internals and fuel would be just fine... right?

What are your thoughts guys? Things to watch out for? Things to buy in addition to support this change? Ive installed an NA-T setup in a lexus gs300 so im not clueless, but aside from getting a boost gauge and wideband fuel sensor and gauge, what would you all suggest or advise?

Thanks in advance and looking to pick your collective brains as I re-enter the world of forced induction :D

You will get more responses if you post up in the FI section and that is a clean ride

Thanks for the compliment Yoda! I tried to post in that forum, but since it was my first post, I think the moderators decided this was the place my thread should be ;)

did the stuff you bought come with injectors? do you have a downpipe and turbo manifold as well? prolly would be best to provide a detailed parts list and photos too. good luck and welcome.

The kit did not come with injectors. It came with:
- turbo manifold
- turbo
- downpipe
- all piping
- all clamps and connectors
- intercooler
- AEM FIC
- boomslang harness
- oil pan with return bung and line
- feed line
- blow test

The kit was run on a first gen xB so while the piping is slightly different than what greddy gives you but works well

Here's some pics of the components

^ What are the questions, exactly? I saw some really general ones towards the top, but nothing specific.

I should probably delineate better questions lol my first ones were pretty general;

1. How reliable is this kit?

2. Ive heard that the AEM FIC was better than the greddy emanage that came with it but I read that quite a few yaris owners on these boards had issues with that piggyback. Any specific reasons why? Interaction with different ecus?

3. Any issues with melting stuff near the firewall due to the close proximity of the downpipe? Wrapping or ceramic coating advisable or preferred?

4. Will the stock injectors and fuel pump handle the fuel needs based on a 5 psi max on the Wastegate? Im not planning to push more than that, not going for big numbers... yet lol

5. Suggested oil weight to run at different times and temps of the year? I live in nj

6. Expected numbers to the wheels based on the 5psi max?

Im sure ill have more as discussion commences but that is just to start

1. You will be hard pressed to get answers here as most folks have not installed a greddy turbo kit. There are some folks out there though.

2. You could see success with either. There have been mixed experiences with the FIC. I personally had no luck with it. I ditched it for an EMS V2. Toyota ECMs are very intelligent and can fight you tooth and nail so dojng your research is a good thing.

3. I would always recommend wrapping and using upgraded heat shields. In the end it is a cheap alternative to what could happen. I love my DEI heat shield. I also love my lava rock turbo blanket. I always recommend wrap as well. it also promotes efficency.

4. At 5psi you are fine with the stock pump. I would recommend moving to a set of 1zz injectors. At that low a boost they are perfectly fine. they run around 240cc as opposed to the 160cc that are stock.

5. I live in northern Maine and run 5-20 religiously. I would also run only a full synthetic with turbo. Talking about oil I would also upgrade your turbo with the cooling lines if tge kit doesn't currently have it. As for filters I would go with the Mann offering. It has a less restrictive structure. Even AMSOIL recommends the Mann filter for a turbo install.

6. I am on Tapatalk so can't go back while I type....I can't recall if ypu have a manual or slushbox. The turbo kit will really make a big difference however I would guess around 120-145hp with an auto or 135-150hp with a manual. really tough to tell not knowing all pf the specifics.

Hope this helps some. For some ideas on parts upgrades you can check out my Team Tiamat Racing 2014 Build thread. I do share info on parts for your question 3. 5psi is honestly child's play even for this engine so your reliability should be very easy to keep as long as ypu can tune that fuel fine.
