Just a Wee exhaust leak
Finally got around to addressing a leak which became apparant last spring. As part of winterizing, I swap out my Tanabe for the stock exhaust. Leak became really obvious with the noise of the Tanabe removed, so today I got on it.
Was totally flabbergasted at how little of the original header/down pipe gasket remained. With new one in, I'd forgotten how pathetically quiet these cars really run.

Oddly enough I had the very same gasket replaced today.
It looked just a touch better, but I could hear the leak on a cold morning. Easy and efficient fix:-) |

Yeah, dealer.
NAPA didn't carry the stuff, and I didn't feel like wasting time searching for cheaper alternatives. I'd be interested in what American dealerships charge. Gasket $49.28 Bolts $8.28 each BTW, new bolts are 14mm. One of the old ones took a 13mm nicely. The other one I had to hammer on a 12mm to get it out.

these parts are for between the down pipe and the rear muffler right ? I was wondering if I can use the same parts for the header to the front of the down pipe section ...
I have the weapon R header, nitto midpipe and nitto muffler.... I smell the gas fumes getting stronger lately , and it sounds prrrp prrrp prrrp prrrp ( hope it right ...lol) from between the header and the front midpipe |

Your symptoms do indicate that you have the same blown gasket as I had.

Have ordered these parts from wrenchmonkey.ca (gasket and spring bolt kit) for my '09 Yaris ... $34.00CDN ($11.00 of which is shipping) ... should be here in a week. Had the same problem with an Echo I owned several years ago ... muffler shop charged me twice as much for parts as I paid at wrenchmonkey.
Exhaust leak has gotten worse daily since I became aware of it last weekend ... will it be OK to drive until parts come in and can fix the leak in a weeks time? |

Wow, why are you reviving such an old thread?
Yes it will be OK to drive with an exhaust leak, though you might smell exhaust gas in the cabin Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk |

Nothing wrong with a thread revival, especially when it is one of mine

Don't drive forever with the exhaust leak, though. Get it fixed when you can. Remember that exhaust gases are toxic so if you're planning on idling for a long time, windows open and fresh air running!
Also, with exhaust gas slipping past the front gasket your car you will eventually throw a code for poor catalytic converter performance, which if you have a smog test means you will fail. Fortunately, the important (front) sensor is just before the gasket (engine side) so you shouldn't get bad mpg or risk damaging the catalytic converter. |
