What temp to bake headlights? - Toyota Yaris Forums

Hi was wondering the temp and time you guys put your headlights in the oven before you pry them open. Also, i believe you put them back in the oven to reseal them. Correct? I will for sure reseal them with some silicone. Do I put silicone where the old sealant is and rebake to seal? or should i just try and reheat the old sealant squeeze it together one last time, then when cooled put silicone bead on the outside where the lens meets the housing.

I am hoping to take out the orange reflector this weekend.

*I'd like to hear the responses of people who've actually done it to their yaris headlights.

Why would you want to pry your headlights open?

200-210 for 5-7 minutes should do it. If you are having trouble, leave them in there for around 10.

the link said not to leave them in there for 5-7 minutes straight. What am I suppose to do? Take it out every two minutes, let it cool for 10 seconds and then put it back in for the remaining time?

I guess I'll check the headlights every 3 minutes or so and try and pry it. if i can't, i'll put it in for another minute, then try and pry it again and repeat process until successfull.

i swear you are suppose to put the headlights back in the oven after you take them apart to reheat the existing seal. but that link didn't say to. he didn't even reseal the headlights with silicone though! So can I realllly trust him!? haha

man the sealant that comes with the light is gonna be a pita to get back in place, i bought some sealant from autozone and replaced it

I would get a friend and 2 hairdryers to reseal them. Each of you take a side and go around and heat the sealant, get it hot and push the halves back together.

Then I used Black RTV and run a bead of that around the seal after you are done just to make sure you cover any possible leaks.

Keep the oven as low as possible. It really depends on your oven, but just keep an eye on it.

Lowest temp possible, you do not want to warp anything. I turned mine on to 300 then turned it off, let it sit for 10 minutes then popped them in the oven, laying them on a towel as to not melt anything. 5 minutes later it was ready to go.

225 F for 5 minutes. Use a cookie sheet.

Well that was relatively painless the only hiccup was that my small apartment size oven was too small for me to close with the headlight in it.

I set my oven to 275 but i would recommend closer to 220 if you can get the oven door shut. I left it in for almost ten minutes and I put the headlight on a wet dishtowel on a baking sheet to keep the plastic from melting.

As you can see from the pictures after you remove the reflector there is a hole visible where the side marker light comes through. I'm not sure how it will look at night. I'm thinking of painting the reflector black or silver and then re-installing it. What do you think?

Well If you don't like the bulb, you could always take it out. What is that bulb called? Is that the city light bulb or something. Is it just a plain color bulb? I would say take it out. Might look weird at night.
