Nope. It's not your fault. The trans is pretty smart so if the car has been "working", such as climbing a hill or (as we say in Maine) "your givin' her a good hot suppa' " the trans will anticipate the need to hold third gear awhile instead of constantly shifting. Honestly, one of the best features of the AT in my opinion as this is one of the things that drove me crazy about traditional autos. Coupled with the engine braking and DFCO this was a major sell on the AT for me, and I have traditionally bought manuals.

If you decide on Auto Trans you wont be disappointed, the Yaris Auto transmission is one of the best I have driven.

+1000. Surprisingly intelligent transmission. Probably the best automatic I have ever driven. Very sorry to say the manual is among the worst I have ever driven.

When I had the Tacoma (stick) and my wife had the Avalon (auto), many times I would get in her car and my left foot would instinctively feel for the clutch!

my is 5 speed, and now no body want to drive in my car, it's fun by myself, but carry other peoples - not, so go with Auto, and they get the same MPG or even better.

With this car no matter what you will want to have a stick shift. Much better control over your engine's power band which could become critical depending upon the situation....and no I am not talking about hot rodding the car. I have driven a few of the auto yarii and was not impressed at all.

If you have a Motorcycle background like I do... 5 speed Manual was my only choice! I do like Automatic, with Muscle Cars... where when you need the power it's there.
It's up to you and how comfortable you feel. .

I have had manual transmisions all my life (+27 years). I love the simplicity. Driving a stick becomes an automatic response...
It is all about preference, though. I have heard good things about the Auto in the Yaris! I like manuals because you can control your torque... gearing during slippery snow weather. Also, if your battery dies... you can jump on the fly... popping the clutch to start. Good luck on your decision... Cheers!

Just wanted to post again since this got so many responses!
I picked up a 2010 certified used AT 5 door a few days ago for $14,000 with <6,000 miles on it! It's got the 60/40 fold flat seats and cruise control, both of which I was really hoping for (mainly the 60/40 seats). I decided to get the AT not only because I thought this particular car was being offered in a good situation (good financing from a reputable dealer and the features I wanted), but also because I realized I use my hands waaaay too much while driving to have to shift gears. My girlfriend agreed that I would probably kill us in a MT. Thank you all very much for the responses! I can't wait until my next fill up so I can see what kind of mpg I'm getting on my 90 mile roundtrip daily commute (I haven't had to put any gas in since driving it off the lot). |

Congratulations! Certified used is great way to go; better warranty than new. Post some photos if you get a chance.

Well done!! Mine was Certified Used, too. Didn't used the warranty once, though, there hasn't been a single problem with the car since I got it, knock on wood.
