08 yaris, 70k miles

about a month ago started getting a grinding noise coming from engine area. I cant pinpoint exactly where. Sounds like a bearing going bad.

Anyone have this problem?

thanks !!!

It could be the water pump bearing or alternator pulley. Do you hear it while you drive or only makes the noise in idle?

I can hear it at all times.
Its more noticeable when I'm sitting still with no road noise.

Loosen the belt (by loosening the two alternator bolts) and try rotating the alternator and water pump by hand to see if either is obviously the culprit.

i bet it's the water pump. mine grinded pretty bad when it went at about 75,000 miles. i bought an aftermarket pump for $40 and had local mechanic replace it for $130 labor....much cheaper than the $450-500 toyota quoted me. and i think the oem toyota water pump is crap anyway, so i wanted a different brand. mine was gmb brand.

Hopefully the new waterpump installed under warranty will last longer . 200,000 plus miles would be good .

Did you check the gonkultor connection? Sometimes if that slips, you will hear a grinding sound when the air is lost in the water collection chamber. If that is in fact the case, you will need to barrow a vacuum stretcher from Autozone. They will require a deposit of course.

The red one is Crashy 2. I rescued her from a deer hit and put her back on the road. Here's her story:

It's deff the water pump, mine made grinding noises when I was at a stand still. Eventually after me ignoring it for a while my belt completely ripped off without me noticing and my car started to overheat, had to replace the water pump did it myself. 80$ for the part, shop wanted to charge 400 -_-

Without looking at how hard it would be access, you could use a long piece of wood rod or something like this as a stethoscope. Hold one end against the various components and the other to your ear. You can do this with the easy ones and eliminate those. Unless you have a real stethoscope. However, You probably could not do this with the water pump due to the location though....just watch out for the moving belt etc.
