Toyota 0w-20 synthetic is very good oil from MOBIL .
Then this is the EXACT oil I will use when I change it. Question: I have 492 miles thus far. I know that building engines is a lot "cleaner" these days, with fewer microscopic metal particles bouncing around and all...but when do I change my oil to not only get rid of most of these little eroding particles, but also switch to synthetic?

Yes. I have done the "search", read the threads, and my manual. I value YOUR opinion, Hershey. That is why I am asking you.

I am averaging 28.8 mpg, mostly city, very little (15% highway). Last fill-up was 34.8mpg combined, only 492 on the odo as of last night.

Also: anyone see these ga$ price$ climbing? I bought my Yaris just before the sh!t is gonna hit the fan (again, like in 2008), with the "market adjustment" (READ: gouging) fee on economy cars from the dealers of $1-2k over sticker because it doesn't get 15mpg (like back in '08, Priuii were going $3k OVER sticker where I live--and people were paying it!!!)

If you are gonna buy a Yaris--do it now before Armageddon!

With you being in Texas , I'd suggest staying with a synthetic 5w-30 such as Pennzoil Platinum , Pennzoil Ultra , etc.. Go to Bob Is The Oil Guy for more input . Very informative site . Here's their site , http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ .

I'm there!

But when should I switch from the "break-in oil"?

2,500 miles ? Break in is said to be at 1,000 or so in the owners manual if I remember right . Changed the factory fill out at around 1,200 miles for the '08 sedan and replaced with Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 / Toyota ( Denso ) 90915-YZZF2 oil filter .

Minnesota will be going to 20% ethanol fuel on August 31, 2013. My mileage is also about 10% lower than with non-oxygenated gas. I expect to loose another 10% when the new fuel hits the pumps. Right now non-oxygenated gas is about 25-35 cents per gallon higher than 10% ethanol. If the mileage loss is as high as 20%, it will be cheaper to buy the non-ethanol given the better mileage.

I thought the same thing. There is no way in hell I'm waiting until 5K to change the break-in oil! I'll change it at 1,000, in a couple of weeks.

I just passed 800 tonight.

agreed that is just dumb. I changed my oil every 1000 miles for the first 3,000 miles just to make darn sure.

I guess it's my turn to share:

Purchased SE A/T 02/20/12

1st fill - 02/25/12 264mi @ 9.180g = 28.758mpg
2nd fill - 03/09/12 222.5mi @ 8.411g = 26.453mpg

487mi total.

I hate to say it, but being the techno-remedial that I am, I waiting until 5,000 miles to change my break in oil. Should I expect something bad to happen in the future?

Actually, I think I waited the 6 month period, and I had around 3,400 miles on the car before I changed my break in oil....
