I have a feeling since you have an 09 w/ ABS, your cluster will be an easy swap...lol
I looked at Mad Dog's hi res pics in the previous page and you too have the ABS icon and stuff.....so no problem with that ;)

I love it when I end up w/ complications in life..

Lewis mentioned an interesting dilemma with it; The connectors are on opposite sides, so the cables won't reach.

Thats something I didn't catch in the photos from Mad Dog. The only thing I can think of for that at the moment would be do find a salvaged Yaris and cut the wires off that, unless the same gauge wires can be spliced and soldered onto the ones on the connector.

I'll fire it up on the bench first and then to run it in Crashy, I'll have to splice an extra foot onto each wire.

yes Scott -the humor of this situation can help offset the extra work involved for you regarding the cables.

imagine if everything is inverted like the cables- for instance the speed would go down on the speedometer as you go faster etc.!

I know i bit off more than i can chew with the OZ cluster- luckily we have somebody here with very sharp teeth- Scott!

p.s. they say water goes down the drain anti-clockwise in OZ- perhaps that was a warning!

Update: I received the OZ cluster from Lewis today!

I immediately had to open the box and hook it up on Crashy. With the swapped connectors (since it is for a RHD Yaris) I just hooked up connector D1, which has power, CAN bus, fuel gauge, tach, speed, etc (the other just has the feeds for a bunch of the indicator lights).

It powered up fine and the fuel gauge showed proper level. So, I started the car and the tach worked correctly, but the speedometer stayed at zero. This cluster is off an ABS car, so that makes sense, as Crashy is non-ABS.

The issue though is that the cluster is indeed angled to... the passenger (at least on this side of the world). The VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) is reversed and is mounted in that chunk at the bottom and is pointed to the left. A concave mirror magnifies and inverts the VFD and angles the display to the USDM passenger.

Being an Engineer, I just had to take it apart to see how it was setup and to snap some pics. Here they are:

So could you transplant the guts of the aussie cluster , into the USDM
unit , or is it not that easy

The USDM one is just a flat plane. The Aussie one has the lens in the same place, but the guts and case are completely different to make the VFD work correctly. I was initially thinking that you could modify the bottom chunk and the back to point towards the left, but the upper portion has a molded tunnel that is angled from left to right. It would take some creative plastic work to make the display point left.

Scott and Lewis,

Glad it works. Looks like some more work is required to make it useable for you though.

Scott,

I know you just got the unit, but is there any chance of a fix so the Km/L would work for us Aussies?

Without modification the speedometer/tach portion are really not viewable at all from the driver's side.

so it looks like its a bust for LHD cars then :(

so looks like the only way to get a tachometer and speedo is the get the USDM tach/speedo combo then

Scott, Anyway to rig up a sedan cluster? How far off is the fit?

I always see those for sale and there super cheap!

sedan cluster should be the same size as the liftback cluster, but the plugs to connect are different from the liftback......

Also.....is your car ABS enabled kustom? If not, you will run into problems like Lewis and I.... :P
