Changing Automatic Transmission to Manual Inquiry

Out of curiosity, I'm wondering what all must be done to change an automatic transmission to a manual on an '09 Yaris Hatchback. I understand it may be quite expensive and labor intensive, but I still wonder what all is involved mechanically in such a switch. What parts would be needed to do something like this? Let's assume money and labor is not the issue.

Time, money, tools, and guts.

It's not as bad as it seems. I converted one the opposite way (MT to AT) and that way requires adding 19 wires the the ECM harness (or switching to an AT engine harness).

The sum of the parts could be crazy expensive, but with my kit in the link above, you are only looking at that plus the cost of a MT (used low mileage ones can be had for under $500). Labor-wise it is really about the same as dropping the tranny to replace the clutch.

It's very tempting, but I can't quite decide whether I want to make the switch. I'd hate to spend the money and time and end up wishing I kept the automatic. Looks like a good deal for all those parts.

Correct. I have one 06-08 MT ECM on hand. 06-08 and 09+ are readily available used for under $100.

CTScott, is there a choice with what kind of manual transmission I could put in an '09 Yaris as far as gearing goes (I'd prefer higher gearing), or are they all geared the same?

There are no plug and play choices really. There are several threads here about performing an xB final drive swap. Search those terms to find them.

^Exactly. You are really limited to the C50 transmission for a direct fit solution.

Okay, thanks.

To remove the automatic transmission, is doing all these things (starting on page 168) necessary? Looks like a big job.

Yes. The stuff shown in that section only takes a couple of minutes to remove. The big pieces are disconnecting the shafts, and unbolting the tranny from the engine. All in all, for someone experienced it is probably a one day job.
