Factory Stereo and Amplifier - can I do this?

Title says it all. But I want to keep my stock head unit and add an amplifier. Can this be done?

yes, but you will need a line out converter, or an amp that accepts high level inputs

Thanks for the links, I'm gonna go with a line-out converter and am currently looking at amps now.

edit: Going for amp that excepts high lv inputs.

I'm doing this very thing. Stock HU and main speakers for now, and just installing an amp and 1 12" sub in a small box.
Once I get my flip up Monitor HU I'll install componets in the front, and 2 ways in the back.

Lucky for my my JBL amp has high level inputs already.
I'll just run my remote on switch from the sig lighter for now

scratch that, just read in the owners manual no remote on wire is needed if using high level inputs with my amp.
Sweet.
Just need to find an sub now

Keep us up to date.

I would like to add just a little bit of bass to my car. Nothing fancy just enough for ME without annoying other drivers. If I use converters to change my rear speaker outputs into RCAs, wouldn't I then need an amp for my rear speakers and another amp for a sub?

Anyone know of an amp with enough channels to do this all in one?

I'm running a JBL BP 300.1 amp. 300W @2 ohm or 1ohm, 150W @ 4ohm, it has low level RCA inputs as well as front and rear L/R high level inputs.

Any amp with high level inputs will work with no need to buy anything.
All you do is splice into the signal wires to the speakers and run them to the amp.
If you don't have high level inputs on your amp (only low level RCA) you just buy a hi-low convertor, and wire it the same way into the cars speakers then plug the RCA's into the amp.

No need to run an amp to the rest of the cars speakers if you don't want to at this time.

This works out pretty decent in most cases because it allows you to turn down the bass to the main speakers for better sound and less distortion, and allows you to adjust the bass with the amp/sub.

Even my more pricey amps have had them though, I've seriously never seen one without them.
