Auto locks when starting

Hi

wondering if anyone have thought about adding a feature to the yaris like most more expensive cars have: when you begin driving and reach like 5 or 10 mph, the power locks automatically engage...

Would this require much wiring, would it be possible to take speed from a gps instead of wiring into speed sensor wiring? And better yet, could a device simply transmit a remote key lock signal, triggered by gps, and thus be entirely standalone and not require cutting wires at all?

And, the six hundred dollar question, can I buy a device like this off eBay?

I have the Power Package, so mine locks as soon as you turn the key in the ignition right before start. I suppose you can build something like this, but be warned it could take-up alot of time and money

Most aftermarket keyless entry systems and alarms have ignition controlled locks that will lock when you turn the key to the ignition position and unlock when you cut the ignition switch off. You can buy a good keyless entry system for less than $40-$50.

Well I have the power package, and it doesn't lock automatically. Is this a malfunction?

In TechStream, the body ECU doesn't have an option for autolock, but with techstream you can send a simple CAN message to body ECU to lock or unlock the doors. So, it would be very possible to create a device to do this based on speed, etc.

Though, the easiest/cheapest method is definitely to add a cheap alarm or remote starter which has the ability to lock when the car is started.

Please I dont want any stuff like this on my next Yaris/car. It only breaks after five or six years and costs $$$ to fix. I can lock my own doors even at 53!

Man, my friend's jetta would do this, and his door locks were these jagged little pieces of crap. If you had your arm on the door when he hit 10, that sucker was taking skin off.. lol

Serious question though, if the car loses power do the doors unlock?? I've never been mugged on the freeway, but I drive by bodies of water quite often.

Once they're locked they stay locked until you hit the switch (or manually unlock them). A sudden loss of power won't unlock them since the lock/unlock motor has to actually be driven to change state.

I've got the Power Package, and my doors don't lock themselves when I start up. I'd've heard them clunk.

Nice solution!

By the way, I noticed the discussion of the auto off headlights in the thread. Here's my solution for that for the Yaris. It would definitely work for Scions as well:

I built mine for like 35 bucks using cheap Radio Shack components. My system unlocks the doors as soon as I turn the key off. It so far has been nothing but reliable, and the wife loves the security of not having anyone opening any door and hijacking the car, when driving in a parking lot by herself. It's REALLY NOT HARD TO DO...

I have a 2010 sedan with power package and mine does not either!!!???? I'd like it too, but after a few days of remembering to do it after you start the car or as soon as you get in, it becomes automatic any ways
