Car occassionally makes brief squealing noise at startup...

Didn't start until I had the belt replaced about 25k miles ago. Happens in any weather... had one shop install it and squeal started. They told me sometimes it's caused by the belt stretching after new install or something of that nature. They tightened it and the noise went away for a while.

Started doing it again more recently so I had another shop look at it. They said it does it for like an instant at startup but they didn't hear anything else past that and I guess there wasn't anything they could do to fix it?

The second shop did suggest it might be a pully going bad? I guess the pulley's have bearings???

Anybody?

What brand of belt is it? Some of the stiffer composition belts (like Dayco) are prone to that behavior.

I'm not 100% sure - but I will inquire when I'm in for my next service. The other shop I went to couldn't find any issues with the car at all so I'm guessing it's likely what you're describing...

I ran into this with my red Yaris, when I installed a Dayco belt. I tightened it about half a dozen times before I threw it in the trash and installed a Gates.

I'm pretty sure it's the belt as well. Mine was just about to explode when I finally figured out where the sound came from.

Ive had this for a long time. I figured it was the aluminum MI pulley. I think the belt I installed was a Dayco...ill check when I get a moment

Belt squeel can be from a belt not tight enough, too tight, warn belt, a crappy new one or crooked warn pullys.
