i actually wanted a practical car with some what modding potential. all the above was just too impractical. and i always wanted the new Yaris since it was release in Japan in Feb 05. was looking at the other cars cuz i didnt know how close the spec was for the Canadian Model would be compare to the JDM spec. plus, this car is so cheap to maintain and high value even after 4-5 years. it was hard not to buy it, since i probably wont lose much money on this car. so why not? afterall it is a lightweight compact that is fun to drive

I got the Yaris for the same reason.. Then I can keep my MINI for weekend group gathering or group drive.

At the time, the only other car I was thinking about was the Honda Fit, and not seriously at first. But once I test drove it, it became an honest contender.
Yaris won out of course. Wasnt overly impressed w/ the Fit's appearance outwardly, and the interior, though finished nicer than the Yaris's I found, I enjoyed the uniqueness of the Yaris's better (plus I loved the centre mounted dash of the Yaris... note: I hated the Echos though). Now though if I was re-shopping for a car, the VW Rabbit would be a real contender... But I think think I'd have gone for the peppy Yaris over the more powerful Rabbit, even though it has a MILLION more features. I like the cool and nimbleness of the Yaris! Plus Japanese Toyota build quality and gas mileage were HUGE factors. The Yaris really beats the Rabbit in MPG! |

The new Rabbits are entirely made in German, save for the engine. So the engine might be the only "iffy" part in my mind about the new Rabbits... anything coming out of Wolfsburg should be top notch craftsmanship. Jem

My G/F choose to buy the Echo because of the Toyota reputation. She don't test drive any other car.
I test drive a lot of car and I really love my Chevy Cavalier with the Ecotec engine. Almost same fuel milleage than a Yaris but with 50 more horsepower of pure pleasure! It was also cheaper. The Cavy cost brand new 10,999$ with the auto tranny. The Cavy was originaly bought by my mother 3yrs ago and I bought it from her some month ago. But I help her to choose in the past. We test drive together the Aveo (same as actual) and the Echo sedan (remember we are in autumn 2003) and she dislike the Echo because of is real poor performance. Even if my mother is 54 yrs old, she don't feel confident with the Echo performance because of the heavy hill in our area and when you try to pass beyond another car on the road. Now she drive a brand new Toyota Matrix (1.8L auto) and she really like her new car because of the driving position and confort (high seat, great space for legs, ect), but she told me she REALLY miss the performance of her old Cavalier.

It was either this or a Scion xB. My wife really hated the looks of the xB, and the Yaris got better mileage with about the same cargo capacity, so I went with the Yaris.

I started out looking at the 05-06 Mustang and 350Z, as well as the chevy colorado, and toyota tundra/tacoma
Then I took a long look at the solstice (sp) Then just for the heck of it decided to test drive an econo box after the wife spotted a Yaris and wondered what it would be like. From there I test drive the several VW's, Mini cooper, Suzuki swift, Mazda 3 sport/sedan, kia's, Hyundia, dodge neon and caliber, Honda civic and fit, Aveo etc etc. After crunching numbers the savings we would have from driving an econo box for a few years we could not only have a NEW car but also pay off our debts and possibly have enough for me to buy another motorcycle. we test drove dozens of cars and trucks but kept comming back to the yaris. It was not the cheapest or the fastest but just the best overall package IMO.

We looked at several, but mostly all in the same class:
Dodge Caliber + Nice Features availiable - Too pricey for the features, and gets horrible milage, just like the PT Cruiser we traded in Chevy HHR - Looked at it for 2 seconds, just entirely too ugly VW Rabbit + Very nice, largest engine in class, powerful, roomy - Concerns about quality in VW products lately, the 5-cyl is a gas guzzler for it's size, worse milage than my I30. VW R32 + Everything on this car is a plus.... period, ultimate sleeper hatch - WAY out of my price range. Nissan Versa + I love the feature set and the CVT on the SL + Convenience - No real minuses, in fact it's just a matter of preference, the significant other wanted the Yaris, but the Versa, well, I'll be trading in my I30 soon. |

I don't want to hurt anybody and not be unrespectfull against anybody. But I'm really amazed to read people who says "I was looking for a 350Z, but finally I choose a Yaris". WTF??!!??
Most people will buy a Yaris because it's cheap. If you have money to buy a 350Z, what the hell are you doing with a Yaris? And don't claim about the fuel economy please. You have the money to consider a 350Z, you have the money to pay gas! I'm a potential buyer of a Yaris, true. But only as a secondary car. I've bought my mother's Cavy only for some month, during the time I save some several money for a cash-down on a brand new house. After that, I'll keep the 2k3 Cavy as my winter beater and buy a car similar to my old Nissan Altima 2.5S, a mid-sized sedan.

Nissan Sentra
-the look of the car is just kind of dated to me. I much prefer the Altima and Maxima but those are way out of my price range. Honda Civic -I don't know why but I've just never liked Civics and buying a 2 yr old Civic wasn't really saving me much money while a brand new one is out of my price range. Car is also a little larger than what I'm looking for. Toyota Corolla -I was really on the verge of buying a brand new 2006 Corolla when it was going to take 2+ months to get a Yaris and I was buying from a dealer my sister-in-law works for so I could get the car similarly priced with some better features. However, I see around 50 Corollas whenever I drive. Even more than I see Civics probably. There was just nothing "special" though I think I would have been happy with the car. Mazda3 -I really like this car but it's just a bit out of my price range. Hyundai Elentra -The one with a hatch is a neat looking car, you can get them for pretty cheap even brand new, but it doesn't have very good mpg. I don't like the Accent at all. Once I saw the Yaris ad on Edmunds, I really started looking at that. Also looked at the other new econo cars but I just didn't care for the Fit or Versa and Dodge's supposed econo car (Calibur). Also thought about getting a Scion xA for a bit. Something about the Yaris just really appealed to me. It has a very distinct look for both the exterior and interior. Also think it was a good transition to sedans from my old coupe Escort ZX2. Last edited by ceres; 09-11-2006 at 08:09 PM. |

I acutally tried low-balling the Honda sales guy on a Fit sport but ended up getting a loaded 5dr Yaris for $3500 less then what the Fit Sport was going for (The sales guy wouldn't go under $23,000 for the Fit and that's after he already knocked off over $1000 off the price).
I was dead set on getting the Fit, but after the bad sales Episode and after hearing that the Yaris could be just as sporty as the Fit, I decided to to give it try. I had taken the Fit for 5 test drives, but ended up buying the Yaris in only one. I suppose the Yaris simply fitted me better then the Fit. Last edited by Pars; 09-12-2006 at 07:17 AM. |

Who said this is my only car? If I was worried about being cheap I would not have got the loaded 5 door, RS that cost me over 21,000 with what I wanted. That works out to about the same price as the Mazda 3sport. I would have got the aveo or kia or base yaris or some used echo or something like that if it was about price. I sold my truck because my wife does a lot of down town buffalo city driving, lots of short trips and highways. I wanted to get her something more reliable better on fuel and smaller then my Xtreme (16mpg city 24 hwy). Driving the truck in congested city streets and finding parking is insane. I still wanted a truck and looked at afew but a car was much more practical. Why was I looking at the sports cars? because the last year model 350Z or used and Mustanges were being sold cheap and payments on my truck was already close to $500 a month plus $165 a month insurance. Same price range as the Mustang and 350Z except insurance was more. Still something I could afford but as I said as I looked around at more and more cars it just made more sence... Why live paycheck to paycheck and drive a nice sports/performance car when I could pay off all my debts, and buy other stuff and still have $$$ left over. Do I need another sports car? NO I already have two. Do I need a truck? not really I can use my work truck or wifes work truck any time I want. Plus the yaris hatch has plenty of room for anything I have hauled in my truck. Do I need another TOY? I already own a 78 camaro with 400hp systemax engine, 67 valiant with mostyly stock 440/3 speed, 91 Talon /laser RS, 88 Sunbird turbo, 95 Honda VLX, 76 honda chopper (under construction) YZ400, RM125 Basically it came down to what I already said. HUGE savings My car payments are $300 and insurance is $100 a month. I save over $200 in fuel a month I have already taken a huge chunk out of my debts, I'm able to finish building my chopper, I'm saving for a new crotch rocket (GSXR or GSXF) and money to burn. I've already gone on a couple trips this summer, got a new boat motor and still save $$$. Sure the stang ,Z or solstice would be nice and the wife really liked them but the wife liked the yaris just as much when it came to everyday driving, I liked it, i'm very happy to save $500+ a month. Now that we save $$$ we think back and thank God we did not buy another costly car. FWIW MANY of the Yaris owner I know also have much nicer and more costly cars in the stable parked next to their yaris (daily comuter car)
