mileage getting better

I have 2000 miles on my Yaris hatch. The mileage is getting better. First tank was about 34 mpg, my last tank was 36mpg. This is around town and mostly short trips ( less than 10 miles), also ac on most of the time.

My break in point seemed to end at about 4k miles. change to synthetic oil at your 5k mile oil change. Inflate your tires to sidewall pressures.

ugh

And mine just keep getting worse.... passing 8000 miles on it now.

Instead of the increasin miles at start, from 33 to 26 myself, today I was scared to see at 140miles the tank is half way..... usually its 180-210 before it indicates that... wtf is going on, all my tires are fine, and I didnt add anything in the past few gas tanks....

Over 62mph and the mpg plummets. Synthetic oil helps a bit. Examine your driving style and maybe invest in a scangauge.

Also remember extra stuff in the car reduces mileage (weight), roof rack of any kind reduces mileage (drag), having your windows open (more so at high speeds like highway kills mileage), keep a consistant speed as possible, also remember short trips where the engine doesn't fully warm up effects mileage. Just food for thought! Hope it gets better!

seeing as you live in nyc, i'm assuming you probably spend a lot of time in traffic, idling at stop lights, etc., as echoknight suggests, short trips are a killer for fuel economy.
if you have manual trans, try shutting the engine off and coasting in neutral to stop lights that you know to be long.

Using ethanol 10% mixed could cause a drop as well. At some point we will have no choice.

I am curious how did you figure this out? Hmmm, I was under the assumption if I was cruising on the highways doing 70mph I would be safe to keep the good
mileage, but you say no?

Scangauge has mpg and spd as well as 2 other settings on the same screen. It starts going down at about 52-53mph at 62 it just drops all the way off. To hold the yaris at 63-65mph you are getting like 28-32mpg. At 55mph the yaris is getting about 42mpg. This is in the automatic the manual may be different. At 60mph it is only turning 2600rpm. Cruise control would smooth this out a bit as well.

Most of this tank has been with a passenger/lots of high rev's/70-110mph driving. And yes I have been driving in the street a lot more then highway this tank aswell. Top that off, I had a flat tire that I was on for who knows how long. My tires are basically run flat tires. But they were pretty low, only had like 5psi in them... Maybe that also was the reason why.....

And I have too much junk in the car aswell that I have to get rid off. I will wait till this tank is done, refill, empty the car out of all its junk(except my system), and drive at the most of 65mph for the whole tank and I will let you all know what I get again next week.(I say this cause this week will be almost all highway driving.)

70-110mph driving
yeah, this speed will kill your fuel efficiency, slowing down should improve it.

while driving on the high at 70mph-105mph on an engine that's already warmed up, I've been getting about 34.5mpg on a manual transmission.

In the automatic coasting in neutral alleviates the drag from the trans when in gear. Allows for a higher coasting speed. The length of coast is extended as well.

On my 5spd Geo I always coasted in neutral, and the results were higher as well. The scangauge shows this instantly.

The rpms of both cars drop below 700 in neutral.

people with scangauge have shown better milage when in neutral... plus i can coast longer without the added drag of the engine...
