Squeals and rattles

My 2007 Yaris Sedan is at 55k. When stopped at a light or stop sign I would hear a LOUD rattle. Also when I started the car a squealing belt!

The dealer fixed everything, $230.00 and said the rattle was the "intake" that needed to be adjusted and the squeal was that the ac belt needed to be replaced.

2 months out of that repair and the squeal has returned. Everytime I turn the car on it squeals for about 3 seconds. The belts seem tight. I put some soap on them, seems to have turned the 3 second squeal into a 1/2 second squeak.

How annoying!

At 55K they may have actually replaced the belt to cure the squeal and a new belt will stretch a bit and needs to be re-tightened after a short period of use. Putting soap on the belt is not a good idea, as it lubricates the belt making it slip even more, and a slipping belt will glaze the contact surface (which is where the surface gets hot enough to harden the surface, where it then completely loses its gripping ability).

The rattle in the intake was probably nut shells from mice nesting in there.

Is this someting to worry about in my climate? (I know there are some mice or rats in the neighborhood)

make sure there is no belt dressing on the pulleys or the belt. the belt dressing is what is causing the squeaking. the belt has to be completely dry on all the pulleys
