07 yaris won't start (odd warning lights on)

Hi all,

My 07 yaris is having a bit of an issue. This is a recurring issue that has vanished for months at a time. The car suddenly won't start. No clicking coming from the engine. Error lights that will come on are the P/S (power steering) and the cool engine light will flash. After the failed start, when I turn the key to the off position, the dashboard and all of the lights will stay on, and the engine fan will turn on. This will continue until I turn the car back to the on position, or unplug the battery cable. I have found nothing similar to this when searching the forum and the web. I'll attach a video to show exactly what is going on (at the bottom). The other times that this has happened (3 times), the solution seemed to be unplugging the battery cable or unplugging some of the random wires in fuse box in the hood. And recommendations on where to take it (whether it be a toyota dealer or someone else) or how to fix it would be awesome.

Thanks for reading and below is the URL for the video.

How old is your battery? The Yaris' electronics really do not like low voltage and cranking the engine is the largest draw. Disconnecting the battery or unplugging the correct connector with reboot the ECM,

By the way, your video is "private", so it is not viewable.

Sorry about the video! I changed it to public. The battery still seems to hold a charge well. It kept the car and the engine fan on for a while while we were still toying around with it. I don't think that could be related to the car not turning off when I remove the keys though. The car isn't clicking as if it is trying to start.

Thanks for the help

You said on the video when it started the harness under the hood was smoking. Pull the connection off inspect and clean with electric parts cleaner spray.

The smoke piece would definitely concern me. I would check for melted insulation of the wires in that area, corrosion on the connector contacts and also corrosion on the ECM connectors. The behavior is due to the ECM not being happy, but the question is why.
