CV axle DIY?
recently after putting on my winter tires i noticed both drivers and passenger sides have torn cv boots. I think they are both clicking but for sure the passenger one is.
I searched the forums and found some useful information, but now need some questions answered. Is not repairing this going to lead to expensive transmission repairs? How long can i safely ride with torn cv boots? While I'm told to replace the entire cv axles with new ones, what other components should i replace while doing the cv axle replacement? Also curious about changing the transmission fluid, will the fluid come spilling out when i remove the cv axle? Just want to have all my parts together before taking on what seams to be a monstrous job. Would like to go into the mechanic with some knowledge, or if its a Novice job that i can handle DIY'ing it. My car has 180K and im looking at rebuilding the entire front end so that i can drive this car for another 180k front struts are about 90k old.. Any help would be awesome!! Thanks, |

If they are clicking they will not last long before failing catastrophically. That will mean the joint completely failing, but damage to the tranny itself is unlikely.
When you pull the axle on either MT or AT, fluid will spill out, so you do want to drain it first (and ideally not put the used fluid back in).

Thanks CTScott..!
What about other parts that I should replace while getting to the axle? Ball joints, stabilizer links, struts, wheel bearings? Cheers |

With 180K km, I would check all of those before disassembling the car to determine if they are due or not. I personally would not replace all of those just for the sake of doing so, but if any are even close to due, then this is definitely an easy time to do so.

CTScott:
Can the CV axles be removed independently from each other? According to some internet sources some cars need one side removed & then a "drift" to displace the other side. How difficult is it to get the CV axle to slide out from the transaxle housing? |

They come out independently on the Yaris. I find them extremely easy to remove, as there is a nice notch on the inner joint that l get a giant flat blade screwdriver onto and then whack the handle of the screwdriver with a hard rubber mallet.

Got a mechanic to look over the front end... he says both stabilizers and shafts need to be replaced... hes going to charge me $150 for labour... getting a parts quote for after market shafts and Toyota brand stabilizers.

Would the CVT fluid leak while replacing axles?
