What size boards can you fit in your Yaris? - Toyota Yaris Forums

I suddenly have a lot of home improvement to do, so simple question...

What size lumber can you carry in your Yaris?

I don't need a huge quantity at one time, just wondering about the max length for those typical couple-of-miles trips to Home Depot and back.

that's a good question. I want to build a painting wall in my back yard this spring and was trying to figure out the plywood shapes that would fit...

You can fit around 12 8ft 2x4s in a 5dr with the hatch closed (and no passengers). One end in the RF footwell and diagonal through the car. You'll have to remove the glovebox to fit the last few. I had 7 2x4s and 9 1x4s in the car which is pretty much maxed. I've also had a 4x8 sheet ripped in half in the car with the hatch closed. Basically windshield to back-glass, and against drivers shoulder. There's room for other stuff in the car as well in both cases, but for long stuff that is the max.

I thought I got a disproportionate amount of stuff into a Yaris, but 12 2x4 is top drawer. now that I have a roof rack I only stuff the occasional door trim in full length

I laugh when I see SUV drivers struggling at Ikea to fit stuff in the back, and my little hatchback just swallows boxes.

I have with no problem brought home 10' and 12' lumber. Diagonal with one end sticking out the passenger window, with the back of the passenger seat leaning forward and lumber behind the back of the seat. Then, slide the base of the set back so the lumber can't slide and hit the right hand rear view mirror. Works well for piping material as well. The only thing you need to watch is the weight of the lumber....treated lumber can be quite heavy compared to untreated....your door will be holding the weight and you should common sense here.

I have a roof rack and have been carrying home 3/4" full sheets of plywood as I remodel my kitchen. (Keep in mind the rack load limit is 250# and a sheet is about 50# - I usually only buy 2 sheets at a time anyway.)

When I move drywall I put a couple 2x4's on the rack first to support it so it does not break. Or I try to buy plywood and drywall at the same time. I love the new lighter weight drywall.

If you have an SUV the sheets won't fit inside and you need a ladder to use the roof! So the Yaris wins again. This is yet another reason to lower your Yaris, too. ;-) Makes it a little easier to use the roof rack.

When only buying trim or 2x4's we usually tuck them inside. My passenger is constrained but she still fits. 2 miles to Lowes or 4 miles to the Home Depot so it's quick.
