Fontana Auto-X, May 3, 2009

So here it is. I'm finally getting around to posting this.

The auto-x at Fontana was pretty cool. I had a good time, and liked the overall experience. Waking up early sucks for me. Waking up that early, and on a SUNDAY, really blows! But, I've been wanting to try auto-x for some years now. I'm glad Lt.Noogie and others are posting their experiences, pics, and videos, as it all helped me make the decision to get out there finally.

SOOOOO. How'd I do? I haven't seen the posted times on the SCCA site, but the fastest times I observed others do were in the 55 second range. Those were the beasts. 4WD EVOs, raced out RX-7s, etc. Vettes seemed quick there as well. The Ferrari that was present didn't post the quickest time, but was fairly quick. Anyway, here are my times.

My run group
1st Run - 73.108 (with Noogie)
2nd Run - 72.273 (with Noogie)
3rd Run - 70.979 (alone)

FUN RUNS
1st Run - 71.313 (alone)
2nd Run - 70.956 (alone)
3rd Run - 71.408 (with Noogie)
we went for a "What the hell, let's do one more" run
4th Run - hehe 69.938 ! ! (with Noogie).

This last run, I figured it was my last, so I made it count. I drove very aggressively, and managed to scare Noogie in the process (oops, was I not supposed to tell?). I actually got a bit scared, as I entered the second slalom rather quickly, and broke late and hard before the dreaded double-apex, square-shaped U-turn dealio. The car got a little squirley (sp?) but I managed to keep it composed.

A B I G THANKS goes out to LtNoogie (Long) for guiding me through the process, the laughs, the ride along in his car. Thank you, sir

Things to remember for next time (of for anyone else thinking of doing this):

-Sunscrean. Don't just take it, make sure to actually use it!
-Hydration. I don't drink too much water regularly, but I went through a liter of water and 32oz of Gaterade
-Snacks. I had food, but no snacks. Being able to snack on something during the day would have been good.
