Oil Question

Well I just did the first oil change in our yaris and dug through and through and through the books and paperwork and could only find 5w-30 as the oil to use. So i went and got some Castrol 5w-30 and put it in and all that good stuff. Anyways, the GF found a little piece of paper that was 'dealer installed options' that was stuffed in our file cabinet and it says the dealer changed the motor oil over to Castrol Synthetic Blend.

Would it do any hurt for me to go from Synthetic Blend to regular 5w-30 back to 5w-30 synthetic blend? I figured on the next change i'd go back to synthetic. Is there any ill effects to this?

No, it will not hurt to go to synthetic blend, and back to mineral....it will in fact be better to go full synthetic for better engine longevity, MPG, and less frequent changes, in other words, it saves money.

If it were a high mileage vehicle, then there is a chance that there could be some seepage/blowby issues- but, being a new vehicle, there is no danger in switching between the two.

Another oil question:

I was a cheap bastard today and purchased $1.50 per quart no-name oil. I plan to change my own oil every 3K.

***Note: I also purchased genuine Toyota filters at cost from a link published on yarisworld.com (I love this site!)

As long as I keep a close eye on the oil stick for clarity am I ok?

I hate paying close to $3 for a quart of oil!!!!!! Thats why I drive a Yaris ok (im cheap).

What brand is "No name"?

There are actually some really good, cheap oils out there- Kendall and Coastal are both pretty good oils, and you can buy them at the dollar store.

FYI: Coastal is actually owned by Jim Moran, who is the head honcho of Toyota USA, Southeastern Area. Guess what goes into your Toyota at port?

I look at it this way. Cheaper oil but more frequently = almost the same price as expensive oil less frequuently. If you change your 1.50 oil every 3k and change your 3$ oil every 6k it is the same price. 6k miles on, say, Mobil 1 is a piece o' cake.
