Transmission Question

This may be a stupid question, but my old car had three drive gears (1, 2, and D). My LB yaris automatic has 1, 2, D3. It almost seems like there is a D gear, but I am not sure. Can someone explain the "D" vs. the "D3"? It seems like the car is struggles more at higher speeds with the D3 than what seems to be the D. I just want to make sure the D3 is what I am supposed to be using. Sorry for the stupid question, but my previous car was a 1991 so it was much older. Thanks.

When you are going up hill and you find the transmission constantly searching and shifting into D3 it is best to leick it left and leave it there until you top out the hill.

Next time get a stick, so you can decide which gear you want to run with

Thanks a bunch. To get this straight, for most of my driving (highway and not passing), I should be in D, correct? The D seems so odd since it is right down from N.

That would have made things easier! I only just starting learning to drive a stick so I did not want to get a stick until I know if I would like it. I actually have to admit, I eat breakfast in my car so shifting would get in the way.

That is seriously the perfect post! I am actually a register dietitian so I order supplements such as CIB (carnation instant breakfast) for my patients on a daily basis.

Each has it's merits, but I prefer manual transmission if I can get it - same as jojo - I like to tell the engine what to do, not the other way around. :)

Just put the thing in "D" and drive the car. The automatic transmission is a brilliant piece of work and it knows exactly what to do.

Thank you for you words of wisdom :P. On the automatic, there is no "D" labeled: only D3, 2, 1, etc. My last car only had 1, 2, and D (no "D3" labeled).

Is it... like this?

P
R
N
3D
2
1

For the one with 3D, there actually are left and right.
Left is 3 and right is D.
Maybe it's the other way if your handle is on the right side.
I don't know but if it is, then it has D on the left and 3 on the right?

It is not D3!!!!!! It is 3 - D... which quite simply means that to the left is 3rd gear and to the right is D for drive... which is 4th gear. Try moving the shift lever from left to right when you are in the 3 - D position, then you may catch on to how it works. Or, return to the dealer and ask the service writer to show you how the transmission shifter works.

It is actually a very unusual setup and salespeople should review this with customers.
