Newbie wants to know what to expect

Hi, Peeps. I hope to be joining the ranks of the Yaris owners in about three hours. I have my eye on a brand new 2009 Flint Mica Yaris sedan with the auto tranny.

I am expecting to get at least 38 MPG with my normal driving mix. Let me describe what driving conditions my typical tank of gas will see, and, if you would be kind enough to respond, please tell me what you think I should get for MPG.

I do virtually NO stop and go city driving. When I am in towns, they are small towns, and the traffic moves along nicely most of the time. Probably 80% to 90% of the miles on a typical tank of gas are on rural two lane roads as I travel to and from work. There are a few hills, and I encounter three stop signs along the way. I drive about 60 MPH.

When I am in town, I try to coast up to red lights in hopes that I will not have to come to a complete stop. If I do get caught by a light, I take off in a normal way, not like a jack rabbit.

I would categorize my driving style as "semi" fuel conscious. I'm far from a hypermiler, but I am not a hot rodder either.

Brainless Twit in the New Purchase Forum told me that she has gotten 42 MPG on her last two tanks of gas. She has a longer commute than I do, but the conditions are similar. I would be VERY happy with 42 MPG.

Also, you guys who are so "into" gas mileage, do you find a difference in MPG that seems to be related to the brand of gas that you buy?

Thanks.

Tom

I think you should realistically expect 38-40, without using any hyper milling techniques.
I average 42-45 in the summer, and 37-40 in the winter.

LOTS of threads here on the subject; get comfy and read a few of them, there are plenty of hints and philosophies on the best way to get consistently high mileage.

Your highest fuel consumption will occur during engine warm up. The longer you run with a warmed up engine with your driving condition, 38mpg is very realistic.

i think the manuals have the potential to get better milage than the auto's... I drive a manual LB, and consistently get 43mpg in the summer, and 38-39 in the winter. I do a lot of long trips (500 miles) and therefore my average falls due to driver 75-85mph in attempts to shave an hour or so off my commute.

This summer I plan on being more conservative, and hope to break 45mpg, and possible even break 47mpg.

I just did almost 48mpg on a 250 mile trip on sunday... lots of coasting. Coasting is the key.

For you, expect 36mpg per tank, with some learning I'm sure 40's will be common.

After getting your son into one, the Yaris bug finally got to you...
I guess you're gonna give up that Cobalt you just bought last year huh? Trade in?

Was going to do just that, but the deal fell through. My salesman and I did some dickering over the Internet, and I finally proposed that they sell me the Yaris at invoice and allow me $9500 trade-in. The salesman thought that might be doable, but he said it would all depend on what the official trade-in appraiser said. Well, guess what? That $9500 turned out to be only $8000, so I walked.

There is NO WAY I would take so little for my Cobalt. A lot of it is not necessarily the dealer's fault. When you trade-in a car that is less than a year old, you can plan on taking a huge hit. I just didn't think it would be THAT huge.

Sounds like you're in control of what kind of mileage you will get.

I would guess you'll get low to mid 40's in the warmer months, without changing anything, but you could get in the 50's if you wanted to.

If you drive 50-55MPH max on the rural roads, you'll get in the 50's.

55-60MPH and you'll get 40's.

60-65MPH you'll get 40's and maybe even high 30's in bad conditions if you're going closer to 65.

Of course I'm guessing based on my own experiences, but it seems they apply to you.

I get 35-37 mpg from 1/2 city and 1/2 highway.
I would guess your driving condition will get you 40-45 mpg.

Oh well, no Yaris for you then, huh? You can always let your kid borrow yours and you borrow his.
