August 2015 Yaris Sales: Up

August 2015 Yaris sales were up yet again, this month to the tune of 64.1% vs. August of 2014. Year-to-date Yaris sales are also up 53.5% vs. this time in 2014. This marks the ninth straight month of increased sales for the Yaris compared to the previous year.

I can't believe that the Nissan Versa and Kia Soul sold 15+x more units in August, 2015 and 6-7x YTD. Even the fugly fugly Honda Fit has sold about 3x more YTD in 2015.

Personally, I think Toyota should build a more basic (and cheaper) L model (crank windows, etc.) and a more upgraded (and pricey) SE model that attracts subcompact-segment enthusiasts more (that means more horsepower, etc.). Create more distinctive differences between the L/LE/SE trims to appeal to Versa/Mirage bargain-hunters and small-car 'hot hatch' enthusiasts alike.

Can a fair amount of the sales increase be attributed to the redesign, particularly of the front end?

I would find that hard to believe!

Hey, the "Final Toyota Edition" 2015/2016 Yaris refinements finally convinced me to purchase a 2015 SE manual-5spd, instead of going with either a 2009-2012 Yaris Sedan (Automatic) or a 2012-2015 Manual 6-Spd Acura ILX. Love it or hate it, it will be the last (and most tweaked) incarnation of a "True Toyota Yaris" before Mazda takes over production of the all-new "Yaris" in 2017.

At 858 Yaris units sold for August 2015, that is still only an average of 17-18 2015 Yaris sold per state for the month (and 299 average sold per state year-to-date). I feel like I am driving a Limited Edition vehicle, especially since most of those sold are no doubt L/LE trims (and rental vehicles).

That's a very good point. Keep in mind, the increase is compared to the same time last year. If one was sold in 2014, and two were sold this year, it's a 100% increase!

Compared to many of its competition, the Yaris is a fairly slow seller. However, it is selling better than last year!

Mist definitely in my opinion. The new looks in the 15 Yaris is quite striking. In my opinion, it's the best it's ever looked, and I had an 11. Very European. Probably one of the best looking Toyota's out there today as a matter of fact. Styling is not usually done very well at Toyota. The FJ was a real looker though. And the new Tacoma doesn't look too bad.

So will the new Yaris basically be the same car as a Mazda 2?

Any idea if 3dr, 5dr hatch, and sedan trims will be available?

AFAIK, the Mazda 2 was only ever available in the US as a 4dr hatch.

Considering that the 2016 Yaris Sedan in Canada (and Scion iA here in USA) is a 99% straight re-badge of the 2016 SkyActiv Mazda2 Sedan (which isn't going to be sold in the USA), I would be greatly greatly surprised if the "new" 2017 "Yaris Hatchback" for the USA/Canada was anything other than a 99% straight re-badge of the 2016 SkyActiv Mazda2 Hatchback (also isn't going to be sold in the USA) - made in the same plant down in Mexico.

Luckily I usually buy 4-5 year old used cars, so by the time I am ready for a new car, I can probably pick up a 2014 or 2015 Yaris.

I suppose I would consider a Mazda 2 or possibly a Honda Fit (If I could get over the minivan look).

Will the Mazda 2 ever be sold in the US?

Mazda decided to pull the new 2016 Mazda2 from the U.S. Market at the last moment (probably due to horrible sales of the 2011-2014 Mazda2), and focus their resources on the exploding mini-crossover market via their new CX-3 (which is built on the new Mazda2 platform).

The CX-3 is sure to be a hit, just like the HR-V has been for Honda. Sales of normal hatchbacks and sedans in the U.S. are dropping across-the-board for everyone, in favor or more SUVs, Crossover type vehicles, and Trucks. Even popular, top-tier sedans like the Honda Accord have taken huge hits in sales this last year (I think they were down by nearly 20%).

Yah the small suv-utes are hot commodities. Looked at the HRV. Not overly impressed. Looks cheap. Saw a Buick Encode, new, today. Sharp looking little thing. That's the vehicle keeping Buick afloat at the moment. Selling like hot cakes. Hopefully Toyota gets into the game sooner than later. The Mazda mini looks okay. But the Honda isn't my cup of tea design wise either. But they do have Magic Seats haha cuz it's basically a Fit. Although kudos to Honda for offering a manual transmission in the HRV. Toyota better be very careful with the design too if they offer one. The new Lexus RX is absolutely hideous. Not that it's ever been a looker before.

And Mazda said they weren't bringing the redesigned Mazda 2 to America with the low prices of gas. They don't think they'd make a decent profit. Mazda makes pretty good little cars, but I'm happy that I got my 15 Yaris before they take over Toyota's job on the Yaris, which is absolutely ridiculous in the first place. I'm not paying Toyota money for a Mazda. I'm just not.

I like the idea of a small SUV, but the worse gas mileage and higher price tag all keep me away. The difference between the Chevy Sonic and Trax (same frame) is $6,000. That's ridiculous. All for bigger tires and higher up off the ground. The interior space is pretty much the same.

The Honda Fit sells like hotcakes though....

My brother has a 13 Fit. I had a first and second generation Fit. Was never impressed with the build quality. Not nearly as solid as a Yaris. More refined dash though, center console, and more tech features, but I much prefer the Yaris. Both the 11 I had, and now my 15.

And the current Fit is so homely with all those lines.

The front looks okay, but those side line-grooves along with the horrendous taillights and rear bumper just totally ruin it for me.
