I think generally we think too much about the oil in the car. How would anybody REALLY know which oil is better than another? Are you analyzing the engine parts at a lab?? Seems silly to me.
I truly believe that if you use a name-brand oil with the recommended weight (5-20, 5-30, or whatever) and change your oil & filter frequently (every 3,000 miles or 5,000) your engine will last and last and last. The trick to longevity is keeping the engine oil clean, by frequently flushing it out with new, clean, oil. Beyond that, I have no idea how one would determine which oil works better. |

You just want quiet, smooth engine reasonable economy, service life and not varnish. The Varnish will break loose at the oil changeout period and can get into small places and cause problems. Sales staff say our car has Life time "chain tensioner" and hydraulic cam phasing so this parts do not suffer varnish floating around without problem. My Family had Mazda v6 which tensioner alway is failing due to dirty oil and so to my brothers motorcycle. He had to switch to superior AECA formulation from inferior ILSAC SM specification N.A. gunk. Sorry I digress ...So, the wider the Viscosity Index the less optimal the oil will be for long life and varnish creation (cause by oxidisation of polymeric additives). So even in Ethylene gas synthesized - 0W30 worse than 10W30 and 0W20 (cause of tighter VI) better than 0w30 if engine expressly designed for the base oil weight. Yaris 1dot5 litre is not designed for 0W base oil and will have shortened service interval in this suboptimal application. Sorry Gentlemen - I try to act like dumb skirt so people will not hate me and like me but i have to throw down the gauntlet now seeing so much misinformation on this forum. Sorry to say API oil "sucks" All of it.

we're using synthetic because it tames the engine noise and do many short trips. Someday may switch to a syn-blend and then to conventional oil again .

My dad says:
Try CD oil detergent with extreme pressure-wear additives available at the local auto-parts store is very good to get API oil perform almost like AECA A3 B3? Except Viscosity will be less for economy. Will make almost to Porsche spec -S |

if using an 5w-20 , I read it's best to use one that's rated ACEA A_ and B1 or greater . The PENNZOIL Platinum 5w-20 we're using is only rated A1-02 , while the PLATINUM 5w-30 is also B1 and B5 . I believe MOBIL 1 5w-20 has a B rating , as for other manufacturers . Would have to do some searching on the web or in the store . May go to another 5w-20 synthetic that has the B rating . The ratings are printed on the label on back of the oil bottle .

I would use AMSOIL or REDLINE if they were cheaper . PENNZOIL Platinum gets very good U.O.A.s ( used oil analysis ) at www.bobistheoilguy.com ( look under Used Oil Analysis - Gas ) , plus it's fairly cheap . I've picked up the PLATINUM for less than $3 a quart in the past .

When it will be time for my first oil change, I'll be using Mobil 1 5W-20.
Been using Mobil 1 for many, many years and never had any engine problems; besides our C55AMG and C350 uses Mobil 1 too. |

with the PLATINUM 5w-30 the power is good , been averaging close to 39 miles per gallon since last NOVEMBER , and it tames the engine noise . Using REDLINE MT-90 true synthetic gear oil as well for the '08 5 speed liftback . This car was used for delivery route once a week for about 8 months as well , so quite extreme driving . One time the car got 42 m.p.g. while doing the route , other times 40 or little less ( some of that included 4 studded tires ). The route was 100+ miles , 4 hours long , around 400 stops , many steep hills , and 2 people . There's usually 2 of us in the car since the purchase . The '08 automatic sedan has the PLATINUM 5w-20 and got 40.03 miles per gallon on a test drive after 4 studded tires were put on ( see post under FUEL ECONOMY FORUM ) . That car has overall average of 39 miles per gallon as well , right on par with the stick shift . We'll have to wait and see how the colder weather affects it .

I'd go with the XL 5w-20 at that price . The U.O.A.s for XL are very impressive at B.I.T.O.G.. Decisions , decisions .

I'm getting a special price, not sure what the real list price would be. Probably $7.50 for XL and $9.00 for the HP...

just went from PENNZOIL Platinum 5w-30 > Platinum 5w-20 for the '08 Liftback at 13,400 miles . Took little less than 3 and a 1/2 quarts to bring to FULL mark . The new TOYOTA ( Denso ) 90915-YZZF2 oil filter soaked up close to 5 ounces of the oil needed for the change . May go with the MOBIL 1 E.P. 5w-20 or give a few calls to local auto parts stores to see if any AMSOIL XL 5w-20 is available and the cost per quart . This wouild be for the '08 sedan due for oil change next month , currently PLATINUM 5w-20 .
