Transmission revving to 3,500 when cold

When I drive my car after initial startup, my transmission won't change until it reaches about 3,500 rpm. Once I have driven about 2km/1m, the gear changes are normal at much lower rpm.
I s this an expected warm up period, or is it a problem? I haven't been for my first service yet, so the car is fairly new.

Yes this is "normal." It has to do with emissions. When your car is cold it emits more emissions, than when its warm. The transmission won't go into the overdrive gears until it reaches a certain temp.

Just don't race it (when cold) and you should be fine. My car does this too. I think most Toyota's do. I don't know about other car makes.

Thanks for the responses. At least I don't have to take my car in for an early service.
My car does stay at high revs even to 100 kph, but I am seconds from a major highway so it is still a bit cold. Apparently this is normal though. My 1995 Corolla and 2006 Rav4 don't have the same feature.

All late model cars do this. The late shifting forces higher RPM's which cause the catelytic converter to heat up to full operational temperature faster. It will not be effective until that happens. The car will shift normal once the water temp reaches 130 degress F. Until then, DON'T rev past 2,500 and just tippy-toe and drive slow...let the oil wake up and circulate around....once the "cool" light on the dash goes off, the temp is 130 or great, then you can start to drive a little more aggressive.
