Roof mount bike rack

I am looking to purchase a bike rack and I thought it might be helpful to perhaps have a set of rails on the roof to mount the bikes/whatever else I can put up there on. Perhaps this may not even be possible since the car is so small, but has anyone had any success with this sort of thing? Or do you have other suggestions?

Also, feel free to let me know if this is stupid or will look ridiculous, cause I know my wife won't worry about hurting my feelings if she thinks it stupid.

If you go online to Thule or Yakama websites, they make racks for Yaris. You will need the foot packs, bars and kit made for your Yaris.
The cost is somewhere around $300 for all parts needed.

Doesnt look silly or ridiculous at all.

The first two hatches have this kit.
They also have the thule fairing, a bike tray attachment, and a basket.

The third hatch has the same system but it also has the 477 short roof extension, used to carry longer things such as surfboards, larger baskets, and boats.

contact me if you need more info.

I believe the OP is inquiring about a permanent mount rack system.

We had a member who installed one for carrying his kayaks. Posted a DIY on mounting the rails. If you've the stomach for drilling holes (very, very carefully laid out) into the roof of your car, then it is a very clean looking option.

A search using keyword kayak should have found the thread, but I suspect is was lost in the Oct '08 hack.

Roof racks are hard on your shoulders and permanently eat 2-5% of your fuel economy due to added wind resistance (which means you'll pay for a roof rack more than once).

I recommend a hitch and rack combo instead. They come a little cheaper than a roof rack, too.

Curious what combination would be best

Brian, you seem to have it down to a science, so I'm curious of your opinion on what I should do with my Yaris Liftback. I am planning on moving from Phoenix to New York with a friend and I have been worried about the trunk space, since we will be taking as much as our belongings as we can. I have a small BMX bike I want to take, but I don't want to sacrifice the mpg I am working on building up (I am at 38mpg from 32mpg!) so would I be better off getting a bike rack and a roof luggage bag? or just springing for a full roof rack, since the weight will probably ruin my mpg anyway? Any reliable yet cheap brands you recommend? and how would that a bike rack work with the liftback door? Thanks for your help!

@imjustagirl8_05

I have a hitch basket that I got a bike adapter for, but with a BMX you could possibly just strap it on top of whatever you put in the basket.
You can get the hitch, basket, and strapping at either etrailer.com, autoanything.com or even amazon.com
The basket will hold 3 large cooler size boxes which nearly doubles your cargo volume for the 3 door.

Just keep the total weight on the hitch below 200lb.
