Just pop the little rectangular cover directly behind it, on the inside of the hatch. Once you do you will see the lever that the latch pushes on. Simply push it to the side with you finger and the hatch will pop open.

You can remove the one bolt on the inside of the hatch to remove the entire lock assembly to clean and lube it. If the latch assembly is the problem, you can remove that from the bottom edge of the hatch and do the same.

I see how it works now... but on mine the white plastic thing wont go in the unlock position.
I can leave it unlocked and lock it but the key just cant force it over to unlock
.... I lubed it well with wd40 but
still wont go... Would it be a big deal to replace the whole key drum and plastic thing with an aftermarket assembly that would fit in there??The drum seems to be held in my 2 bolts..not 1

You can replace it, but unless you have a locksmith modify the existing one you will need a separate key for the hatch. I have a couple of spare ones if you need one, as I changed two of mine over to using the Scion IQ hatch knob with switch and have it electrically actuated:

Also, try a different key, if you have a spare, as it may be that your key has worn too much for the hatch lock.
