Meet Mr.ugly.
Here's the underside of speaker baffle, Spectrum'd a few layers. Added that 3/4" ring. Put up a ghetto dowel fence.. to act as a frame for when i glass. It was a pain in the ass.. I had to trim every individual piece to size, then hot glue them into place.. side The top being mounted. Glued, screwed, clamped. I regret buying gorilla glue over titebond. Polyurethane glue is such a beezneetch to work with.. not to mention only half the strength as titebond. Here you can see what i have to repair :[. The gap which i must fill.. because i did a sloppy trim job. Lesson learned, FOR SURE. I would just wrap the side of the plug w/ cloth.. and reglass. but if i did, it would create a hump that wouldn't sit flush with the trunk. speaker ring rounded |

What happened with the backside so that you needed to raise the baffle? Was it just how you cut it down?
I would imagine that you're going to find it difficult to just lay mat over the outside and achieve the result you're looking for. Do you have some kitty hair (long strand fiberglass filler)? I think that's what the 1/2" long strand fiberglass filler is in one of your pictures (don't forget the hardener). I would fill it from the inside if at all possible THEN trim it down from the outside. This is what I did to fill all my seams...eF titebond or silicone. I just glassed my seams. This is what I used: I'm thinking that'll solve the issue. No sweat needed.

Yeah, i was going to create a kitty hair mix.
It's essentially thick milkshake with long strand fiberglass correct ? [body filler , resin. both hardeners.] That's a good idea though-- starting from the inside of the plug. I was really only going to do it from the outside.. Silly me. I'll probably end up doing it from the inside as best i can, then the outside. Then trim it down. The ring on the backside of the baffle is only there to reinforce the speaker ring. The top ring is simply a vanity piece. |

I think that 1/2" stuff you bought will work without adding resin.
Just to test it, add some cream hardener to a small little dab and see how it finishes. I'm thinking that you'll do fine with the inside-out plugging...okay, that just sounded wrong. ANYWAY, you know what I mean. Let's see some progress pics with that when you have some.
