Timing chain/tensioner noise, or something else?
I have a '12 hatch with a 5-speed and about 58k miles. It has always been serviced on time and has been on synthetic oil since about 30k miles. I drive it pretty hard (lots of high revs and gunning it) but I'm smooth about it, like no dropping the clutch or power shifting.
Anyway, it has started making a mechanical rattly shhhhh sound that's especially noticeable on fast idle after a cold startup. It has done this a few times in the past when it's sat for a month without running (like over Christmas) but always stopped after a few days once it was back on its normal schedule. I have noticed no change in how it drives and there are no codes or lights on the dash. It started doing it again after it sat for a few weeks over the holidays this year. I changed the oil since it was due for a change and it stopped for a few days but seems to be back permanently now. It has always been kind of a noisy/tappy engine so I wanted to know if this was a common thing as they age or if I need to get it looked at before something expensive breaks. Here are some videos - it is a little hard to hear over the other engine noises but hopefully some of y'all who are intimate with this engine will be able to pick it out It's probably the clearest in this video - warm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS4OhBhctbI before oil change - cold https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzSUZXWtcDw after oil change - warmed up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o10qKXAvQuE |

Sounds just like mine with 165k, I wouldn't worry too much as long as the coolant and oil aren't leaking (for comparison I go from full oil to 1/2 on the dip stick after 6000 hard miles). I drive aggressively also and I've had no problems

Thanks everyone. It is definitely a new thing so I wanted to be sure it wasn't something that could make "expensive noises" if I ignore it.
It definitely comes and goes which is what's weird to me. |

Go have it checked by a mechanics if in doubt. Seriously.

I wonder if your exhaust gasket is worn. One between the manifold and mid pipe. You're at about the mileage for a new one. I drive hard and kill them 70-80,000 km. Guaranteed that will quiet your situation down.
