Yaris Gas Problem

I just filled up the whole tank of gas couple days ago, i got a Sedan 5 speed version. Today i look at my gas tank and it only has 3 bar left, and i only drove 220 miles. So i dont think Yaris really do 40mpg as they advertise it, and another weird thing is. I was left my car running, while i'm stepping out for a smoke, 5 minutes later i got back in my car and it went back up to 4 bar of gas.

Is it normal to most of you guys?.....

it's normal for the bars to go up while the car is idling-it's happened to me as well. Also, this car will get 40mpg+ if you never go beyond 3100rpm and no more than 65mph. My car will drop to 36mpg if I drive it at 75mph constantly. Also, it doesn't seem to matter that much if I am in town or highway-I get 38-39mpg "in town" if I don't go beyond the above rpms and speed. One more things that affects our cars a lot is wind. Last weekend I did a 187 miles distance in 2 hours sharp. It was constant 95-100mph driving with a moderate head wind and I got.........24mpg :)

I just crossed 200 miles and I am at half a tank, and I have not been kind to the gas pedal ( I do about 80 to 90 on the highway about two or three times a week ).

i drove to works everyday on highway about an hour back and forth, and yeah 80 and 90mph rpm from 2000 to 4000 most of the time. I never pay attention to the gas until i got my Ground Kit and Muffler installed.

There isn't really any perticular reason for the 3100rpm. I asked around here and it seems like nobody thinks that something special is going on at this moment. But, I can swear that my engine sound changes dramatically at 3100rpm and I've noticed a relation with my mpgs as well. You can hear it best in 2nd gear at wot starting at 2000rmp(example). Anyways, it turns out that the yaris is an excellent city car but just a good one on the highway. My ex 89 maxima with a 3L V6 and 3500 pounds was at solid 32mpg on the highway doing 80mph while giving you a lot more space and directional stability(I really hate the directional stability in the yaris-you always have to fight to keep it going straight).

Ha,Chino never fails.I have gotten 42.629 mpg before, that was in the summer time,I didnt use ac,driver window cracked alittle. Now I get around 38-40 and Im still traveling at about 65-80,70mph mostly,I drive 95% highway,I use the ScanGaugeII for accuarcy in time left before empty, and its a wonderfull and useful gadget for alot of things.I have gotten 402 miles on a tank before I filled up,and still had like 35 miles left on SGII display, and thats like 40mpg,I got the tank that low just to see how accurate the SGII and the car gauge was.So yes our cars will easily get 40mpg in the right conditions.

^^^Actually I achieved 45mpg going about 60-65mph, so you don't have to drive too slow. Its the highest I've gotten in my car to date. Obviously there are other factors such as weather and traffic but if its a nice sunny day (little or no wind) and traffic is free flowing then it shouldn't be too hard to get to that number, epecially if you cruise control.

I have a question, does really cold temps affect the gas mileage as well? Our winter has been pretty harsh so far and since the cold has started I have noticed I have lost about 2 mpg. Im sure constant battling of the snow covered streets doesnt help either. Your thoughts?

Yes,cold weather will effect gas milage. They tell you to fill up early in the morning because you will get more gas(it sorta condenses),so if its cold all day and your gas is at that closer state, you will burn more fuel, plus the air is thicker,so its harder on your car to get momentum. The perfect conditions on the car would be a cool day around 65-75 degrees, and you driving about 63mph,because Ive done the math,I have the numbers wrote down somwhere if you all want them, but at that speed, the rpms are the lowest compared to any other speed I test from 20mph-100mph,and that speed is based on speed and rpm ratio to get to that speed and keep it constant.

Ok, ok, I guess I'll add to this also. Bought mine back in Sept. and been getting 35-38 mpg while driving 95% hiway at 75mph. What I have noticed now since we have the cold...I've been letting the car warm up for about 10-15 minutes before I leave to and from work and I've been getting crap for mileage. Don't know if it's the cold (this factor was mentioned here a few threads back) and/or letting the car idle for a short period of time. When I was down to the last two bars, my trip would be around 300 miles. Now, it's like 250! We'll see on my next fill up since I've been going 65 mph on the hiway for a test to see if there is a difference.
Oh, something else I noticed! The cold snaps we had last week with the 0 degree temps.......when I turned the key to "start" position and let the key go to fall back into "on" position, the starter was still trying to turn over for like 2-3 seconds longer as if the key was stuck in the "start" position. We are back in the 20 degree temps (for now) and it has not done it since. Just thought I would add that also.

This car has a "crank hold" function which will basically keep on cranking the engine until a certain amount of time has passed or the engine starts up, nothing to worry about :)
