1.75" (OEM midpipe) to 2.25" (MR axle-back)?

Why does MR use 2.25" pipe which is bigger than 1.75" stock pipe?
Would this cause exhaust velocity to slow down, going from small to big pipe?
Thanks

I assume just because its the first step(usually) in completing a full, free flowing exhaust. If youre going the bolt on route anyhow.
