Mobil SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic is the way to go. A little over 4 bucks at Walmart. I'd buy the OEM Toyota filters on Ebay - 40 bucks for a case of 10. At 4 bucks a filter, thats half the cost of the dealer.

How do you guys change your own oils?

Don't you need a machine that pulls your car up, so you can get under the car and change the oil?

The last time I mixed oil weights in a car, it was blowing smoke out the exhaust pipe until I changed it. I also suffered a number of driveability issues. I would advise not mixing weights. I'm sure it's fine for temporary use, but for long term I would use only corresponding weights.

As far as I knew, it was fairly common knowledge that AMSOIL produced performance fluids for cars - most notably their oil. This answers the question posed in the second post. Look at you guys; arguing and flaming over motor oil. Pathetic.

Soner: The machine that pulls your car up is called a lift. Those will usually run you a couple of thousand dollars for a cheap one. You can go ahead and get one if you like; they are very useful. I personally use a set of ramps; you can also use a carjack and jackstands, all readily available at your local auto parts store for significantly cheaper than the lift(under $60 for a good set?). They all accomplish basically the same thing. The service manual describes the steps required to change your own oil. The filter and drain plug look basically the same on every car, so I'm sure most of the helpful knowledgeable individuals posting in this thread don't rely on the manual. Hope this helps.

nope just creep underneath get the drain plugs out ' u may need a jack ..of course take the engine filler cap off first then the most important thing is "drain"..then change oil filter.., put plugs back in fill oil 5w-30 for canada. wala!!!!! you should get this done in under ten minutes including clean up.

I will look into the autoshops for jackstands b/c I don't want to pay $50 for synthetic oil change everytime. Plus even if I paid $50, I don't even trust mechanics will put expensive synthetic oil anyways... They will probably put cheap oil anyways b/c not many people can tell the difference.
I have no trust for mechanics. I have my own share of experience with them!

just make sure you save your receipts and you wont void your warranty if any. atleast thats in canada im not sure what the policy is in the states.

sorry..i have a very high-tech hydrolic jack, or in other words, IT JUST WON"T GO UP EASILY!!!(leaking fluid)
then,
unscrewing the oil drain plug and the oil filter, 30 minutes.
(warm oil sprayed on your face and have the filter fell on your nose..included)
then,
screw in back the plug and new filter, 45minutes. (dinner included, it was at night time)
then,
back to the garage...put new oil and lower the jack. 30 minutes.
(that DAMn Jack WON'T GO DOWN TOO!!..

)

so..there you go!! my best time for oil changing at home...

As far as oil goes, I've used every brand of 5W-30 syntethic oil out there From Toyota to Mobil1 to Wal-Mart Super Tech. With my car doing 155,000 miles, I've done 30 oil changes @ 5000 miles and each oil change, I use one Toyota oil filter, 3qts of Wal-Mart Super Tech 5W-30 oil and 1qt of oil stabilizer. And my car idles and run as smooth as the first day I bought it.

Damn I changed my engine oil and trans oil in like 20 min.... but I use ramps... screw that jack..... I just stunt driver up on to my ramps, it is always fun with a manual trans
