TPMS Sensors... Do I need them?
So for my birthday I got some new rims (rota grids in flat black) and this weekend I'm putting tires on them and finally getting them on my car but heres the question... Do I absolutely need new TPMS sensors because I dont want to swap them over from the steelies because Ill be using those on and off. I can live with the (_!_) light being on. Anyone running like this??
Thanks!!! |

I run with the little butt light on during the summer. (Seriously, tell me that doesn't look like a butt now that I've mentioned it... )No problems so far and it still passes inspection. There's also a thread here on how to disable it... I'm sure if you search for "TPMS disable" it ought to pop up.

No, TPMS isn't required. But it's nice to have when you are driving a long distance.

I live with the light, and then in the winter it goes away when the snow tires go on, on the original rims.

I have a question: can the TPMS be installed from the stock wheels to any new set of alloys? I don't want to go hacking away at the wiring on my new car...but at the same time, I don't want steelies and hubcaps.

I think all new rims are made for the sensors (since TPMS has been a DOT requirement since 2008).

Only if the alloys have a wide enough trough and the sensor valve angle matches
The attached picture is my stock sensor on a scion alloy. It's not a TPMS-compatible model according to Toyota but works fine |

you do not need them
but -you will need them installed and working- if you plan on ever selling the vehicle |

I made the mod from this forum. A few dollars and about a half hour if I recall. Getting the glove box door off was the worst issue.

i think the TPMS is crucial to use....
because it can monitor the pressure |

...and it doesn't cost an arm an a leg to buy, doesn't just tell you if the tire is low on air, doesn't require expensive batteries/replacements, doesn't need to be installed on every wheel you buy, etc...

Yes, but the TPMS is passive, and constantly monitors pressure. It saved my wife and I some trouble when she picked up a screw Sunday evening. She didn't go out to her car in the morning to find a flat tire. On the whole, though, I agree that it is more expensive and often more of a hassle than it's worth.
