well over in this part of the world the first number does not matter so much, as we do not get cold weather. I have 5w-50 in mine, though I am still trying to find out if we really need such thick oil or not

Why do we need something high up like 50? My other car uses 5w-30 and it is running fine. So maybe 5w-20 is also all right?

second number is relative to ambiant temperature. Indonesia looks like it's quite warm overthere, isn't it ? If 40C is not an unusual temperature, then maybe the W50 is the right oil to be used. Then is the fact that you have those temps all year around, here in Canada 30-35C is quite frequent during summer time, but that lasts only 3-4 months a year. And we use either 0W20 or 5W30. Maybe one should also think in terms of number of warmer days over a year, considering one would do an oil change once or twice a year.

Now I can see why. In my city it never reaches 40, maybe 35 at max. Using a thinner oil will benefit to fuel consumption right? So 5w-20 will be more efficient than say 5w-40?

Does the 5w-20 cost more?? I just had the oil in mine changed but I think they used 5w-30. The service thing earlier in the post said to use what is stated on your oil fill cap, but are thy saying you can also use 5W-20???

ok we are going to pick up our new hatch back this week. a few questions 1. when should i do the first oil change? 2. when i change the oil can i put in the mobil extended 15k mile syn oil? 3. What oil filter do you recommend if i am going to go 15k miles. We live in the mtns and in summer may-early sept the temp is around 80-85 at most. Wife will be using it for her job which she puts about 500 miles a week on it.

My car is at 3800 miles, i'm prob gonna wait until after my 15k mile service to switch to Mobil 1, so at 20k miles i'll switch, that will give everything plenty of time to break in.

hi guys, as you'll probably know already, my 07 yaris has 325,000 miles on it. and i was contemplating on switching from wal-mart super tech synthetic 5w30 oil to mobil 1 synthetic extended performance 5w30 oil. i usually change oil every 5000 miles, which is about every 2 weeks for me. but i would like to start using the mobil 1 synthetic extended performance 5w30 oil and change my oil every 15,000 miles instead. what do you guy thinks? your opinions would be greatly appreciated. thanx!

The fact is, the ONLY difference is that the 0w protects better during very cold weather during start ups. As to operational oil temperatures (180f to 212f and above) the 5w and 0w both protect the same because they are both 20 weight on the high end of the viscosity range. So at hot operational temperatures, 0w-20 and 5w-20 provide the same protection. |

BTW, I grew up in Hallandale in the '60's (730 NW 1st St.) I still remember the military convoys going down the road towards the south during the Cuban missile crisis. Needless to say, housing density has increased a bit since I lived there.... |

i think royal purple is fully synthetic as well amsoil. Mobil one and some of the cheaper ones are just refined organic oils to the point where they can call it synthetic. But its not fully synthetic. Which is why amsoil oil is supose to be good for 25k miles garenteed.

It's about the additive packages, and not the viscosity. Now as time goes on, more 0w-20 brands will be good for the Yaris, but today not all. |

i dont believe amsoil is any better than anyone else. think they get thier base and additive products from someone else. amsoil doesnt drill oil. mobil does. if amsoil oil is so great why is it so hard to get. just like other mail order products over priced junk
