road trip fuel economy 39 mpg from Franklin PA to Edgewater MD. apx 350 miles.. on the way back 36.5 mpg (lots of uphill) I drove kinda hard too so I'm pleasently surprised!

On my 2007 Yaris Sedan 15.L AT, I got 457 km (50% Highway and 50% city with stop & go but no congestion). I am using P185/60/R15 winter tires and 34.418L of Shell V-Power but hardly any snow. Also, included are several idle running sessions for winter heating up of the engine totaling 60 minutes before I invite kids to jump in. Highway speed on average was 110km/H (~73MPH) and city 60km/H(~38MPH). This translates to MPG of 7.53L per 100km or on average 13.281 km per Litre.

In US imperial units it means
50.274 km per US Gallon or 31.2397 Miles per US Gallon on average

In pure Imperial units, this is equal to
60.277 km per imperial Gallon or 37.5174 Miles per imperial Gallon on average

Much better average than my Corolla indeed. In Summer time, I believe reaching 20km/Litre on freeway is achievable. For verificaion, I will have to wait until I put back summer tires and the summer.

77W....you should have no problems getting to 50 Imp/mpg highway, I regularly get 52 - 54 Imp/mpg at 95 km/h on weekly trips from Kenora to Winnipeg in the spring/summer/fall.

Winter however is a different thing altogether.... 42 - 45 Imp/mpg is the best I can get in the cold and snow..... -35c but not much snow as yet.

I always convert to Imp/mpg with a sliderule in the car so I can't quote the liters/100 km.

Its a nice warm feeling when the math works out to 50 mpg or more

77W, you'd easily get at least 10% better mpg (probably 20%) by simply cutting out all of that warm-up time. Time spent idling is the biggest load on fuel economy. The car will warm up a lot quicker when you're driving it vs. sitting there idling, too.

Try starting the car and immediately driving (gently) and see what it does for your mileage.

I'm still averaging 40mpg running new michelin x-ice xi2's right now-guess they are fuel efficient winter tires. I was mid 40's on the well worn bridgestones before changing over a month ago.

The highway mpg needs to be qualified with the speed limit. 75 mph is the speed limit on the interstates where I live. Doing 80 mph I'll get 37 mpg or less. On the state roads where the limit is 55 mph I'll get over 40 mpg.

We still suck compared to BMW's efficient dynamic range. I rented a 118d in Portugal a few years ago and couldn't believe how good they are. Way more power but better economy too. Still, about 5 times the price. I'm saving for a 320d for the wife.

I'll likely keep the yaris though, I just love it. Super reliable, even when not looked after. We've done 127,000 miles in a 1L petrol car!
This includes driving from Dublin to Bordeaux & back - with three adults, two small kids, suitcases et al, four bicycles and around 20 bottles of fine wines on the floor :)

The poor car struggled on some climbs in the Massif Centrale I'll tell you.
