Wedding band fell INTO car

Hi all,

This is my first post on this forum. I own a 2008 Yaris Hatchback which I love. However, I recently took my wedding band off during a long trip and placed it in one of the side pockets on either side of the center console. Once I reached my destination the ring was gone. After experimenting with some coins, I realized that there are small gaps in these side storage compartments through which pennies and (assumingly my wedding band) can fall. I used a screwdriver to pry open the compartment and was able to see that it leads all the way down into the car. Can someone please tell me if it is likely still within the car or if it more likely fell out of the bottom? I'm not familiar with the anatomy of cars, please don't judge. I'm really just wondering if this ring is lost to me forever or if it would be worth it to take it into a mechanic and have them search within the car (I'm guessing they would have to take apart the center console in order to get in there). Thanks for any feedback.

It is definitely still in the car. Things that go down the rabbit hole there can end up right below the center of the cluster or can make their way back as far as the ebrake lever. You can remove the center console to gain access. Just remove the 10mm bolt in the cup holder at the rear, and then pop the console.

In the couple of wrecked Yaris that I have disassembled I have probably found at least $5 in change in each.

You need to remove the center console

Thanks for the response CTScott. I should clarify that I meant the center control panel. I'll try to upload a picture here. It fell through the storage compartment on the right side there, left of the glove box.

Just pick your Yaris up, turn it upside down and shake it a little bit and your ring will fall back out!

That's what I am talking about as well. Those slots lead down below the AC panel, which in turn is wide open the under the center console.

You don't know how excited you just made me! I'm tempted to go out there in the dark right now to check it out but will try to restrain myself until morning. Thanks so much!

I was thinking the same thing! You guys are too much.
At least the ring was misplaced inside the car....
Way back in the day, working on the used car lot of dads Chevy dealer, I would find loads of change in the cars we moved in & out of there. I remember finding more than 10 bucks of change in a mid 70s Grand Prix...the drivers door sounded like a piggy bank when you closed it...well, until I cleaned it out !

I think we had a bag of italian beefs & fries that day for lunch...

Nook oughta get a kick outta that

Here's a picture of what you will see with the console removed. Note that stuff tends to go down under the carpet so you may have to fish around a bit.

CTScott - Just wanted to let you know that I was able to retrieve my ring after it had been missing for a month thanks to your help! Just as I was about to give up and close the console back up, I found it wedged as deeply as possible in a small crevice between the console and rug. Also found about a dollar in change. Thanks so much!!

Funny.

A short time ago my brother-in-law and I were talking about scrapping and recycling of cars. He was saying that it has been determined that an average of $1.69 is hiding inside of cars being scrapped. I'm not sure of the mechanics, but somebody somewhere had invented a machine which literally picks up and shakes the junker. Loose change is collected in a huge dish below.

$1.69 x ??million cars scrapped annually = some serious coin

During a Christmas break from college I was skiing with some friends at either Squaw Valley or Alpine Meadows (can't remember which), and at the end of the day we started driving back to where we were staying (Crystal Bay, NV right at the state line, IIRC). We decided to stop at a store, IIRC. I started looking around for my Day Runner which had plastic pages with my ID, credit cards, etc in it (mobile phones were around then, they were the ones the size of bricks (may have still been corded) and very few people had them ). I couldn't find it. We pulled over so people could get out and I could get a better look inside the car. I got out of the car, and my Day Runner was on the roof of the car! The ski rack had kept it from sliding off the roof. Given the number of miles and the curvy roadbed, I was amazed it was still there.

I got a chill just reading that! Thank goodness for the ski rack, it would have been history on a flat roof.
Glad you found the ring Roxy, that's pretty important & now you can breathe easy. (WHERE'S the relieved smiley??)

I once lost my virginity as it fell between the rubber surround and the parking brake handle in my 86 Ford Escort. Alas, it was never found so I am assuming that it ended up falling through a hole in the chassis.

Glad you found it! I dropped a small swiss army knife down the hole between the ebrake and the console. It was 2 years before I found that thing. It ended up under the carpet under the passenger seat.
