OEM drum brakes vs aftermarket

Hi all, my 07 Yaris had 65k on it and I want to do the rear brakes. I purchased raybestos drums. Can I purchase raybestos pads too? I read in just answer a Toyota tech said only OEM pads would be quiet. I have had Wagner thermo quiet pads and beck arntly rotors up front since 35k w/ no noise. I would think w/ drums it wouldn't matter. Up front I would think it would matter but it didn't. I would also purchase raybestos hardware. Drums are getting squeaky back there.

Their was a bad winter storm that covered all the U.S. but California and Florida.

I'm pretty sure things rust quickly where your at.

Change the shoes and use anti seize.

Inspect them.
Are the springs or shoes or back plate rusted?
Rusted badly?

Replace the break shoe when the outer side of each shoes pad have been worn down near to the shoe.

If you forget how everything goes look at your other drum break.
or take a picture before starting this job.

This ain't like disk breaks you will need some different tools sometimes.

I'm in Canada my Yaris is 07 with original rear brakes , drums and shoes and we get bad winters and lots of salt on the roads the only rust I have is on the drums the inside is fine but regular maintenance helps a lot ...front maybe rear will last a long time unless u drive with the e brake on lol

If the pad on the shoe looks good then just clean and lube the rest of the assembly.

Note dont lube the shoe pad or where they contact the drum. Big no no.

I'm in California I'm at 60500 miles 2007 yaris sedan no problems with breaks. No squeaking what so ever.

I agree w/ just cleaning the brakes. I have 140,000km on mine and I live in the salt belt. I always adjust my rears so that they're snug and close to engaging and mine still have a lot of pad left.

Before every winter I clean them up and add brake grease to the contact points. I use a wire wheel and compressed air to clean up everything.

FWIW I always use aftermarket and have yet to have any issues on both my cars. That being said I don't race or push the car hard other than regularly travel 120-130km/h on highways.

Wear a mask when cleaning them.

The stuff that flys off the breaks is as bad as asbestos.
Don't clean in your garage. Or in close space unless you have a mask with filter.

Think of your health.

What a nightmare! The raybestos shoes are crap! Glue marks on shoes! One of the raybestos wheel cylinders did not move on one side. Got a autozone replacement! Smahed the other defective one with a sledgehammer! Dont judge its quite enjoyable to smash defective parts! The emergency/parking brake cable requirews this tool: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o00_s00 I used a 1/4 inch SK flare nut wrench to push cable back to expose cable. I held hex end w/ needle nose vice grips. It was tough to reattach that cable. The fiiting to wheel cylinder is 10mm. The nut holding wheel cylinder to back plate is 10mm. I torqued the wheel cylinder to backing plate nut to 100 inch lbs slightly more than the factory torque spec of 10 newton meters. The bleed valve is 8mm/5/16. Lug nuts are 21mm torqued to 76lb feet. I think Im buying only toyota parts from now on! Brakes are lubed on backing plate w/ ceramic brake grease. Click wheel to adjust brakes were lubed w/ valvoline synpower 500 degree grease. Brakes are quiet! No more squeaking during braking!
