Question Rattling Noise

I have a rattle coming from around the right front wheel that is only noticeable when going really slow (like 5mph) and if I speed up, the rattle goes away.

What could it be? Please help! This is driving me insane!!

lol...WIERD!....I had the same problem and I was panicking too.

Questions:

Have you driven over loose gravel recently?
It's only one side right?
Seems to speed up as you accelerate and at some point you don't hear it at all?

My situation:

Where I work, it's a gravel drive way. Recent events were that it had been raining and I would get mud in the wheel wells. Driving home, the water from the rain swept roads would wash all or most of the mud away. The next day or so, I started to hear a clink clink sound, speeding up as I acclerated.

I stopped and looked every place, turned the wheels even, I didn't see anything. I had thought I took one too many dips too quickly and the habit finally caught up with me IE...I did something bad to the suspension.

SKIP TO HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ THE ABOVE:

When I had time, I took the tire off and looked around the entire area, even spun the rotors. Yep, it was a pebble that was stuck on the inside of the rotor and it was bouncing against the brake guard. At higher speeds it just got stuck to the inside of the rotor because of centrifigal forces.

Same for you?

I just took off the caliper and pawed the pebble loose. STUPiD PEBBLE.

1. I have not driven over loose gravel but lately, i have been passing by roads with some pebbles and I would hear them under my car.

2. So far, I can only hear it on the driver side when the window is down.

3. And yes, once I accelerate, it's like the noise was never there. Only when I drive reeeaaal slow.

My uncle thinks its the brake pads. I bought the car used with 10k miles. It now has 31k and I still have not replaced the brake pads ever since.

I am going to bring it to the dealership tomorrow for peace of mind. Thanks for your advice!

I thought it might have been the brake pads too, you know the low pad indicator, but it's not the same sound. I'm at about 25k miles, pads are like new when I looked at them.

To test the brake concern of your Uncle. Go on a drive apply enough pressure to the brakes to where you are still moving, still hear the clink clink? Do you feel any response in your foot? If yes to first, no to second- possibly not the brake pads. (that's what I forgot to mention before, I did that test too)

Letting you know: Other possibilities, at first thought the dealorship might think it's a CV boot/Axle.

Well, get back with us.

I am not sure but I think I can still hear the rattling when I stepped on the brakes and I don't remember feeling anything in my foot.

I hope it's nothing major and/or that it is covered under warranty

Well, your answer corresponds to my thoughts...pebble. Won't really know until someone takes a look at it.

Hope it's just something really simple, and I'm sure it really is simple.

Good Luck Tri, Definitely get back with us once you've gotten it checked.

Haha this is funny since I am experiencing the exact same thing. I'm pretty sure it's just a rock since I JUST replaced my brake pads/rotors a couple months ago.

I'm going to let it go until I switch to my summer tires in April. Chances are it will just disappear when I put those tires back on.

EXACT same thing happened to me. Small rock inside the front brake rotor. Took me 20 minutes to take it apart and put back together.

UGH, I just realized it's the LEFT front, not the right. Correction please, I could hear the rattling on the driver side.. Does it matter which side?

LOL... I am having a mini-breakdown. I think I'll probably lose sleep over this too.. *sigh*

Don't worry, a pebble is a pebble. And if it is where we all had it, won't be detrimental at all to the car.

You dont' have anyone who is handy in the family to just take the wheel off and take a quick look? You should be able to see it stuck between the inside of the rotor (disc) and that brake guard (metal plate that sits next to the rotor).

How I realized it was there, I put my finger on the metal plate while spinning the rotor, the clink would be muffled. So the muffling invited me to look under- into the gap between the guard and the brake rotor.

Unfortunately, there is no one available. Everyone's working during the weekdays and for some reason, bringing it to the dealership always seems to give me peace of mind.

I know, I am a retard! This gives me hope though. Just knowing that I am not the only one :)

Oh no, I didn't mean to offend anyone... hehe. I'm a retard for trusting the dealership too much. That's what I meant. You guys have been really really really helpful. Like I said before, I might print this thread (if I remember) so maybe I can show it to them...
