P0101 and lean condition

Hey fellas. My Yaris has given me it's first (other than self-inflicted) problem. I was about 60 miles from home at a client location and suddenly it felt like I was losing power. The supercharger was making odd noises and it felt like the car was stumbling. I turned boost off and it felt like the car was barely moving at all. It was sortof like the RPMs were just going all over the place, even at idle. It didn't throw a CEL, but I checked it with Torque and there was a pending P0101 and a lean condition. I turned the car off and pulled the MAF, then reseated it and cranked, then it threw a CEL for the 2 pending alerts. I barely limped to an auto zone nearby and bought some MAF cleaner. I sprayed it out as best I could (It was pouring rain, and though I was under an awning there was still moisture everywhere). Waited about 30 minutes until it seemed good and dry, then reinstalled and took off. It did ok for most of the ride home, then started doing the same thing again. I left the boost off the whole time to avoid damage caused by that. By the time I got home it had thrown a CEL for those same 2 errors. It finally quit raining so I yanked the MAF and sprayed a crapton of that cleaner down in there. Do you think the MAF is bad? I've got 63k miles on my car.

Check your wiring where you made the tap to the MAF wire on the ECM when you hooked up the Blitz throttle controller.

Ok, today I spent a couple of hours and made sure every joint from the Blitz install was soldered. That didn't make any difference at all. I cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner again and let it dry. Made no difference. I went to Advance and bought a new MAF. No difference. It's still throwing these 2 codes.

I've gotta get it running again ASAP. My truck is down for the count at the moment with the engine half pulled apart doing a head gasket replacement.

Anyone else have any ideas? CT, anything else you can think of? I'd really like to get this running tomorrow if possible.

Check the PCV hose connections as well.

Do you by any chance have a scangauge or something that will let you watch obd values?

Torque is the only thing I've got. I'll go out there and check the hoses now.

Toque should be OK. Watch the MAF value while while working the throttle a bit. Also watch the calculated load.

I looked at the hoses and didn't see anything obviously wrong. I left my sockets at my parents' house though, so I can't disconnect them to check for cracks and whatnot on the bottom side.

Ok I checked the MAF readings. I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but at idle it was hovering around 3. Giving it a little throttle to get it up to 2k RPM it would get up around 4 or so. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for there.

While I was letting it idle, it was stumbling around all over the place. I have pending errors for misfires on all banks.

Those values sound OK for non load running. So, the ECM is seeing the MAF data correctly.

Does it act the same with the blitz turned off?

Also, check the throttle position data via torque.

I've left the Blitz off ever since it started acting oddly yesterday. I didn't want that to amplify the problem :/

My neighbors are getting ill at me revving my car this late, so I'll have to limit my experiments. However, earlier I was watching the TPS while I was testing after switching the MAF out and TPS data seemed pretty normal.

OK. The misfires say that you are getting too much air or too little fuel.

I would seriously check all vacuum hoses and also the blitz itself for leaks.

Do you know why it would only report bank 1 as being lean?

I was talking to one of my car guy friends. He suggested that maybe I have a faulty injector or a clogged fuel line. I did some reading and that sounds like it could cause what I'm experiencing (though I still don't know about the P0101). Does that seem likely? I'm running used 1zz injectors.

That is definitely possible. A clogged injector is more likely than a clogged fuel line (although a plugged fuel filter is also possible). You could try swapping back to your original injectors.

I've been having similar issues with mine (periodic P0171) ever since I installed a CAI on the Blitz. I was having some serious misfires this week, but cleaning the MAF--and it was FILTHY--seemed to clear most of that up. I also had a loose bolt on the driver's side of the intake flange. Tightening that down seems to have helped with the misfires as well (P0300/301/302).

I'll probably spend some time with brake cleaner this coming weekend to try and pin down the source of the leak.

Ugh.

I don't have time to mess with this junk right now. I guess I'm going to bench the Yaris for a while and get a shop to go ahead and rebuild the truck engine so I have something to drive.

Just got the P0101 today under acceleration. I've confirmed that there is a vacuum leak on both ends of the plenum-head flange, too. Perhaps my MAF is actually borked from all the carbon buildup?
