Simple momentary switch connected to where the original switch is i guess would be easiest.

Or be crazy and have it sense your car's approach and door opens automatically.

I did one on my motorcycle using a momentary push button from an alarm.

I actually got a HomeLink module from the junkyard, took the buttons and LED out, extended the wires, and put the buttons in a blank by my e-brake. The module is up under the gauges. Works great, plus I can re-program it for anything I need.

Where do I find out more about the Homelink module and how it works?
Are you re-programming that module?

HomeLink is something found in a lot of vehicles today, integrated into the rear view mirror, the sun visor, the headliner, etc, etc. It can be programmed to any garage door opener as well as remote light controls. The idea originally was that a person could pull into their driveway, hit one button to turn on the front lights, then hit the garage door button. Only the garage door part stuck, as the house lighting wasn't popular.

I attached some pics of one of the modules I got at a junkyard. You can see the buttons in the console.

This is the HomeLink logo:

This is the removed module:

These are the buttons that need to be unsoldered and wires connected for extending it. I also extended the LED which is used for programming:

And here is my new opener that I made. It's rubber buttons from something else, with a new circuit board with switches under it. Sorry, the second picture is blurry:

Now, this is an easy project if you can solder and have patience!

the big problem with that though is garage door openers have gone to a random billion or trillion+ code rotation, so that only works with older garage door openers now.

I don't know what the new ones are, but I have Lift-Master openers, 2 are brand new, and mine works on them. You're right, you'll have to read the manual first.
