Question Anyone have / had the odor of burning / heated plastic from under the hood ?

Notice this the when climbing hills , especially when car is cold . Quite sure it's the plastic intake manifold . There's NO leaking oil or other fluids . Comes through the vents of the dash on fresh . Is it anything to be concerned about ? Seems more frequent for past few months . Did occur in the past and became sporadic . Wonder if it has something to do with the cold temps that chill the plastic manifold and the sudden heat generated from climbing hills .

never had that on the Yarii, is it auto or MT?

On both my moms camry and my my new journey i get an odd smell when cold and hard driving im assuming something from the tranny or torque converter

I smell something like you describe in automatic cars. I don't think I've ever smelled it before in my Yaris (m/t).

I agree with you and yaris2010RS. I've noticed the smell described in cars with an automatic transmission.

my yaris has that issue. When climbing up the hill burning smell starts. Also loses power. Did any body find out what it could be?

Given all the issues you've had with the Yaris, you should probably get rid of it.

I honestly don't know. I have never smelled that in any of my cars (Miata, GTI, Yaris; all were/are manual). The Camry is automatic, and doesn't have a plastic intake manifold, but I do smell that scent from it. I smell it from some of my friends cars as well, which are also automatics.

jRoss stated (^ above ^) that his manual 2010 Yaris sedan does the same . So much for automatics only .

I know he said that, I was just posting personal experience with the smell. Nothing seems to be consistant...a/t, m/t; plastic manifold, metal manifold...

I've never smelled anything like that, but there are no hills around here. (manual trans).

Well , looks likely it's not anything to worry about related to the engine . Here's the new used oil analysis , http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43653 .

I would say that this is not Yaris related as I have had it in the past myself before with other vehicles. Haven't encountered it on Tiamat before. I have actually had that experience on the 96 FSB I bought in September tho

in autos i believe it would be either the friction plates causing the smell (or the burning auto fluid) or something inside the torque converter.

only "burning" smell ive ever had in my MT is burning tires......and everytime i do any engine work i usually get oil on the header.....that stinks....

One time I stopped and opened the hood when the smell happened . Used the sniffer to locate it and plastic intake manifold was the likely culprit ( strongest at that point ) . Was climbing a very steep hill in 70 degree weather . Give the nose a trial run when it starts to locate the source and report back . May help clear those nasal passages .

Well , a different smell came through the vents while climbing a steep hill . Pulled over , popped the hood and found this .
