$200 for a spare key

We now have a third driver on our 08 Yaris, so i thought i'd get an extra key,The $2.50 spare keys will open the door but wont start the car,i'm told the key needs a chip.
Went to the dealer he said $75 to cut the key then i'd have to bring the car in where they would program the chip for another $75,after tax were talking $200, Thats nuts, any way around this?or thats now the way it is?

Thanks

No way, what year is your car? I keep getting $50 remote keys on ebay that you can program. Just gotta make sure that it's the right part number/

All 08+ cars in Canada have an immobilizer.

75$ to have a new chipkey + cut is about right. You believe you can get the techstream tool to program the key yourself...

by the way, you should have received 3 keys with your car. 1 masterkey with keyless entry, 1 masterkey no remote and a valet key, but if you have a hatchback, you probably don't have a valet key..

If your 08 has the engine immobilizer then the TechStream tool is required to add more keys. You can buy the transponder keys for about $10 (the basic keys, not the ones with the built in keyless entry remote). If someone in your area has a Techstream, it only takes about two minutes to program the system for the new key (or take a roadtrip down to CT).

When i bought the car (new) it came with 3 keys.one with the buttons that did everything, one with no buttons that would manually unlock door and trunk and start the car and one key that would open doors and trunk but wont start the car.
Doing a bit of research seems to have many locksmiths in the area that offer chipped keys, not sure how much but i'll assume its a long way from $200

Programming key takes like 5 min but yes the rate is based on anything with the use of the pc on car standard fee ...scanning for codes etc
Yes it sounds a lot but when u think of the cost of the program , laptop and cost of the tech doing it , it all adds up.

Youtube has some interesting bypass ideas, this one is rather ingenious and costs nothing.

Think i'll go with the $50 key my local locksmith quoted me.
Although the method in the video will probably work i wonder if that chip falls off the steering column or for some reason the signal is interupted does the car shut down?

Heres another way around the dealers exorbitant prices.

Wow. Reminds me of my first day at work when the Superintendent caught me sweeping the floor and moving assemblies from bench to bench because the guy supposed to break me in went home without punching out and I didn't want to get me or him in trouble. The Super said

"Ive been watching you pal and you've been f^&*()_ me don't think I don't know you've been f%^&*() me just like everybody f$%^& me around here!"

$200 for a key....

While i was getting the key made i mentioned this little trick to bypass the dealers high price . he said theres an even easier way, why not just tape your valet key to the underside of the steering column, then you can start the car with any $2 replacement key.

I don't think you have a valet key.

Its the key without all the buttons on it.. I thought it was called a valet key but i could be wrong... It looks the same as the one in the video where he digs out the chip.
heres the 2 keys i got that actually start the car-=

I tried the locksmiths suggestion and it didnt work as there was no place that i could put the factory key that would make a regular $2 key start the car.
