Smile 2007 Toyota Yaris Temperature Question

Hi,

Joined this site today. I bought 2007 Yaris with 31k miles on it. I paid $8200. Hope that is fair price.

Car worked great for day but notice something weird this morning. I started car and saw cool temperature light on. It was on for about < one minute and went away. We are in middle of summer so it was about 85 outside. After parked at work started again at 5PM with 95 outside saw that same light. It went away. Did any one have seen this? If so what would be the reason? Should I get it checked?

I went through the manual and all it says that if it goes away then no worried but my concern is that why would be the engine cool when temperature was 85 outside. Oh and it was parked on driveway not garage.

Any help/guidance is appreciated.

Thanks

85 degrees is cool for an engine to be running at. It needs to warm up to about twice that temperature to be at operating temperature. So don't worry. It is normal for the light to turn on when you first turn on the car.

Like the op said, no worries! It i absolutely normal fo that to happen. It normally stays on maybe a minute or two and then goes away. Sometimes the idle and trans won't shift till a little higher speed, but that is by design, and no need to worry about that. Worry only if the HIGH TEMP indicator gets lit... P.S. Welcome to this forum, and Aloha from Hawaii !

Agreed...All engines on all cars will be cool when started after sitting a while without being on. Just not something you'd really notice on a rotary gauge vs. the hi-tec LED system It's perfectly normal.

Even here in the hottest brain-melting tropical days, the cool light comes on for a lil while, nothing to worry about :)

My Scanguage; when displaying water temperature. Has to reach around 130F before my cold indicator goes off. On my 2007.
As others pointed out. If you have a automatic transmission it shifts differently when cool. 4th is not available until the cold indicator is out.

The automatic transmission doesn't start upshifting normally till just a little after the "COOL!" light goes out. No worries, it's doing what it's programmed to do.

I noticed this when I first got the Yaris... no upshifting until the engine is warm(er).

I've always been taught to not "race" a cold engine, however to me this is like the exact opposite where I drive the car's engine cold with higher RPMs.

Can anyone explain the logic behind this design?

Warms up faster. Cuts air pollution. Doesn't hurt anything.

My Scan gauge usually reads 188 degrees for normal operating temperature.
The blue light goes out when the engine temperature reaches 130 degrees.

I've been a new Yaris owner since 6/12. I didn't notice the cool light because the salesman brought it around to me to take for a test drive. Sunday morning I saw that blue cool light and I freaked out, only to find out it's normal to remain lit for a minute or two. I have never owned a car with this light prior to the Yaris. I first thought, "oh boy, here I go again - another car with problems!"

Is the orange overheated coolant light in the same location?

You can see all of the idiot lights for a few seconds when you start the engine.

X2

I have a mechanical water temp gauge and the blue light goes out at 115-120°F. But my temp probe is in the block, not the head so it take slightly longer to warm up. Normal operating temp is still the same though. Between 185-195 under normal conditions and I've seen as high as 220 sitting on the highway with the A/C pumping in 35°C weather.

rslyk.....explain the TSB.That was from another thread. There's nothing wrong with the OP's yaris....that "cool" light and it's function are normal....so folks will give their vehicles tranny time to reach operating temp.!!!.
