Continuous Starter!! WTF!!!
I have a 2008 LiftBack and periodically when I turn the key to the ''CRANK'' position to start the engine, it continues to keep cranking. I've even got out of the car and stood there looking at it while it continues cranking. The only way to stop it is to turn the key to the off position. Try a re-start and it works OK. Yes, I have taken it to the dealer but all they can tell me is that they cannot replace anything related to the starting system unless they can make the same scenario happen. No such luck. They want me to leave my car with them for a couple of months, HUMMM, make monthly car payments and DON'T get to drive my car, I dont think so.
Anyone have a same starter issue??? Marty |

That has happened about 3 times since I've had my car, dealer said couldn't find anything wrong with anything each time I took car in. I just turn it off when it does it and restart. Mine has only done it during warmer weather.

On my Yaris the engine will crank even after releasing the key from the crank position back to the on position. Once it starts it stops cranking. It seems to be some sort of normal function. Is that what yours is doing?

Its a bump starter. Its completely normal. How does your car not start when its just cranking?

guys.. and girls.. please turn it to "ON" position for at least 5 secs before going to "crank"
this will solve your "unstopping" cranking... and the car not starting up. |

I was guessing weak battery too! Solenoid isn't disengaging correctly because the starter gear is not going through the full length of travel. Is the quick fix to replace the starter return spring? Or is it just cheaper to freshen up the battery with clean contacts, and a good charge and load test?

Does your car have the engine immobilizer? If so, it might be having trouble reading the transponder key.
When I installed my remote starter, my key bypass module was shipped separately, so I initially installed the remote start without out it. In testing the remote start, If I hit the remote start button, without having a key by the keyswitch, the starter would continually crank until I aborted the remote start. |

I have tried the 3 to 5 second method and still occasionally it sticks while in crank mode.
From reading some of your replies on this subject it appears that I'm not alone with this sticky start issue. Again, the engine does not start and run while it's decided to do the auto-crank. I noticed this when I got out and stood there looking at it saying WTF?? while it's just cranking. And yes, that was the ONLY time I got out to look at it while doing this & it was just a couple of seconds. Now when it happens I just turn it off and restart with no problems. |

Yes- I fit in it.

It's called the cranking hold, and it is a feature (although an annoying one) of the car. Mine was acting funny while holding the key at crank like a normal car so I looked in the manual and found it under "starting." You simply turn the key to crank for a second and then it cranks it until it starts- no need to hold it in the cranking position. Now, if it doesn't start, that is another matter.

I'm at 73000 miles, and never have to wait at "acc" or "on" before cranking it over.
Whether or not waiting 5 seconds fixes the problem or not, there is still an underlying problem, or something not working as it was intended. Tell your dealer to fix it or you will go out into the parking lot and turn the car off and on until 1) it repeats the symptoms, or 2) the starter dies and the dealer will be replacing it under warranty. |

Besides the engine immobilizer thing that I mentioned above (of which I take it those of you that have experienced the issue don't have), there are numerous ECM related failure modes which could cause this. Most of these failure modes could be intermittent and could easily be thermally induced.

I'm the original guy that listed this thread.
Answer to your question = NO My car still does the auto-crank from time to time. I tried walking backwards to the car before attempting a start. Tried skipping around the car 2 or 3 times. Tried starting it with my left hand instead of my right hand. Took the spare change from my right pocket and put it in my left pocket, then tried. (just kidding) But yes, it still auto-cranks every month or two and I still say = WTF!!!! |
