Coolant Temp Sensor location?

HI, just been given (free) a 1999 Yaris SR (UK model).

It runs like a bag of spanners when it's cold, but once it heats up it's fine - whcih leads me to believe that the coolant temp sensor (connected to the ECU) is faulty - but where is it?

Can anyone tell me please? Thanks.

I am no mechanics, but have you checked all the components? i mean.. air filter, spark plugs, o2 sensors, MAF?

What does it mean to run like a bag of spanners? Is it automatic or manual ?

Yes, I've checked all that - I AM a mechanic! It's had new plugs, air filter, cleaned the throttle body etc.

It's a manual - but even without driving it it runs lumpy, misfires and smokes (unburnt fuel) until it's warm.

I'm 100% sure it's the coolant temp sensor - I just don't know where to find it - there's 2 sensors down the flywheel side of the head - one has 3 wires and one has 2. Don't know which one it is - if I know, I can unplug it and use a variable resistor to mimic the temp sensor - and then order one from the dealer for it.

"Runs like a bag of spanners" means it's running like crap!

For the USDM, 1NZ-FE the coolant sensor is on the top right of the head. Hope this helps.

if it's lumpy and misfires, have you checked the coil packs ?

It's hard to believe how a coolant temp sensor could affect the car to cause such troubles. Also, if you have the 1.3L or a 1.0L, it would be very hard for us to help, as we only have the 1.5L engine in our yarii.

It's a 1.3. I changed the coolant temp sensor this morning, and no difference. :-(

MAF maybe? The ECU warning light is on - anyone know where I can get software that will read the codes? I have an OBDII interface for the serial port on the PC, but no software.

The check engine is probably throwing a misfire code on one of the cylinder.

I'm repeating myself, Have you check the coil packs?? You are a mechanics, you should be able to diagnose which cylinder is malfunctioning.

try this for the PC ODBII reader.

Just checked with my mate there - he changed the plugs, but not the coil packs - trying to borrow another Yaris to swap the coil packs over - I'll bring the OBD cable in tommorrow and try that software you gave me the link to, thanks.
