Like a kid at Christmas - Cruise Control Kit Arrived!!!
Thanks to CTScott, I received my cruise control kit today. I hope to complete the installation early in the week.
Any recommendations on a tool for drilling the 1 1/8" hole in the steering column? I thought about a spade bit, but afraid it might go too deep into the steering column. Also thought about a hole saw but not sure if I should use one for wood (big teeth) or for metal (small teeth). Maybe a hole saw pilot bit would go too deep. Any recommendations from those with experience would be appreciated.

It's a bit different on my third gen, but I used a step drill To drill the needed hole in the steering wheel lower cover. It's much easier to do on the workbench than in the car, and no worries about drill swarf getting in the works.

Thanks! I am hoping to do it on the car as I'd prefer not to take the steering wheel off. However, once I get in there, it may seem less intimidating. CTScott also suggested a step drill bit. Again, I'm just worried about what's behind there that could get damaged.

You can take off the trim by turning the wheel and exposing the Philips head screws behind the wheel. No need to pull the whole assembly. I think there's one or two more on the underside, probably by the tilt release lever.

Excellent. Thanks. Probably smarter to remove it to do the drilling.

Way smarter, and as Cranky indicated, removal of the column shroud is dead easy.

I did it free hand using a stone wheel. Drop the panel, install your stalk, mark your position, on the panel cover. I drilled a pilot hole used a stepper bit and then the stone , go slow check fit along the way.

Got the stalk installed and wiring in the steering column done but then ran out of good light. I did end up drilling it with the shroud attached and used a spade bit. I went slowly. It did a pretty decent job. A few small plastic fibers still attached, but nothing that some 600 sandpaper around the circumference of the circle won't fix. I'll try to get back at it tomorrow and finish up.
