I don't know how to explain it it sounds like a screeching of some sort is not the belt because I just changed it or squealing it has to be something with the starter doesn't do it all the time once in a while

But then again has been doing it since I bought the car 6 months ago so maybe I shouldn't worry about it, but then again don't wanna damage the starter if it that

I didn't hear it in your video either, but I captured it on video and posted about it here:

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55661

I also found this post reporting the same sound:

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54877

I've had my car at both Toyota and a highly Yelp rated independent shop and neither were able to get to the bottom of it. Part of the problem for me was that they said they couldn't replicate the sound.

I've found that it only happens earlier in the day when the car is colder, or on the first start of the day when the car is cold. Doesn't happen after the car has been started and ran for a while. The best guess from folks here has been the starter sticking too long after the engine turns over, and when pressed for an off the record guess, my mechanic thought the same. I've been holding off on spending the few hundred bucks it'll cost to repair as I'm afraid it won't solve it. Actually hoping the car starts to do it more often so my mechanic can hear it to confirm a diagnosis rather than replace something on guess work.

Please keep us updated if you end up getting to the bottom of it and I'll do the same in my post.

I heard your video yours is very loud mine is not that loud you can bearly hear it on mine but you have to have the volume all the way up you're sounds like the gear of the starter grinding of some sort I'm not very mechanical inclined but that sound similar happened to a Honda before and I replaced the starter and it went away but then what do I know lol you don't want to go trowing parts at it because that could be expensive

Okay, yeah, we have totally diff issues. Early on you used the terms grind and screech. What you really have is a squeal, which is almost definitely a belt. Mine and the one detailed in the other post is more of a grinding screech.

The fact that it doesn't happen when you start the car slowly is mind blowing. The explanation the guy offered in the last video you posted seams reasonable.
