coil packs

2007 hatch 1.5
What is the best deal online on a set of new coil packs??? Is there generic aftermarket stuff available ???

yuck. i'm sure there is some china stuff out there. sticking with OEM or better is recommended.

Napa has the Japanese made Denso branded ones which I believe are the same as the Toyota ones. If not, I found them as good. Avoid the Chinese made ones as I have had to return a few of them.

What he said ^. Denso good. Cheap chinese bad. I've had too many early coil failures due to cheap coils. This is one component where getting a good set is most cost-effective. I can't get Denso via Napa here in Canada, but can through others.

i have noticed recently that parts prices in general for the Yaris/Echo have been dropping considerably.
The injectors reman I bought were 30% cheaper than 4 years ago. There are more junkyard
rigs around now and supply is good.
I need to find a shop somewhere in the US where I can go and work alongside a mechanic to change the clutch. Should be a lttle cheaper that way and he would have the tools and lift.There must be a
place like this around.....Years ago you could find decent mechanics all over the SE but it seems to have changed somewhat.

Doubt you will find that. Insurance wont let that happen. And most shops wont as it cuts into their payout

Clutch is easy to do. You need 10,12', 14, 17, 19, 24 and 32mm

NO insurance company in the world would allow an unlicenced, untrained, uncertified owner even on the shop floor for any reason besides to look period. Shops ocationaly bring customers to visually inspect a vehicle but that requires an escort and they cannot touch anything.
Furthermore no mechanic, technician, shop owner, service manager would do that unless they were completely nuts!
As a master automotive technician I'm insulted that you would even suggest that to be possible. What do you think you could do to help???
Most automotive technicians today have over $50,000 invested in personal tools. There entire adult life in training and understanding of there craft. If they are good at there trade they understand chemestry, advanced mathmatics, a great deal of computer science, software, hardwear, networking, enginering, electronics just to name a few.
A good technician is becoming harder and harder to come by. Why? Because it takes a very intelligent, very highly trained and educated and physically strong individual to be one. People like you assume anybody can do it. Not true. Not even close.
These kind of forums are here so you can share info, tips experiences on one car. Imagine how many forums a tech that is good has to monitor to be at the top of his trade. All of them. It is a very difficult job.
There are a lot of things that can be serviced, replaced and repaired on the Yaris by a non profesional. It is one of the greatest cars for just that. With the help of this forum there are very few things you could not do. It is a huge help.
Please respect the technician at whatever ship you may have your car serviced at. If you do not think he/she is a master at his/her trade then find one that is. They are around. For god sakes do not insult them by expecting to go in there and help them. They are a profesional on your car and every single other car made. If they are a ASE cerified Master Technician chances are they are one of the best in there field.
This is not an easy trade. There are many others that pay more, get more respect, ect. Show them some respect for there trade. I'm most cases they have earned it many times over.

What you say is true, a good mechanic is worth his weight in gold. However I have run into more than a few who are worth their weight in lead. I'm sure this is true in every profession. This post is NOT intended as a personal insult.

no. good technicians are hard to come by because shops/dealerships do not want to pay for quality work. they know there is such a huge saturation of techs out there they can pay some stupid low wages and they will get "acceptable" results. good techs move on to other types of technological work that pay a fair wage. I gave up trying to make a living 5 years ago, now I make 30% more repairing shop equipment and giving dealerships the bill!

all having/being an "ASE Technician" means is you have someone that is good at taking tests and makes enough money to throw away $60+ at each test. (there is +50 tests) it's almost the same as buying a car with a "Carfax." it really doesn't mean much.
i'm not attacking your skills or workmanship, but in my 12 years I never once considered getting ASE's as I seen them as a total waste of money and time. (just like a Carfax) I did complete dealer specific training, as that is what is REALLY needed to get a head in dealerships, and has functional knowledge. (Toyota, Honda, Acura, Volkswagen, Audi)

I have no argument with that. That would mirror my experience. The shops want to charge for top notch work but pay for as you said "acceptable". I work for a parts distributor. As like you I abandoned the tech position many years ago for the same reasons. Poor pay. I put my times and efforts into a diferent game. The buisness I work for is a family buisness. It is in the final stages of sale to Genuine Motor Patrs. I have 8 days left in my career. I will retire at age 42.
You are correct. The shops are not willing to pay for the best, so they leave.
I here what you are saying about the ASE certs. It made sence at one point decades ago. I hold and maintain 42 total ASE certs. The price to do do is absurd. Not at al worth the cost.
Again I have no argument with your point of view. It is spot on.

If you can wait a couple months I'll be selling my oem ones that have 170k km on them once I do my engine swap

I would stick with Denso for coils. You could always get used ones from a scrap yard. I saw someone replace the OEM coils in their BMW on a guess to treat a misfire with Chinese coils and the misfire got even worse. He had already binned the OEM coils and the underlying condition was actually a vacuum leak. Chinese coils are awful.
