Called the dealership today... the service tech said he wasn't aware of any such TSB, at which point I gave him the code at the top right and he pulled it up. He was able to order the part right away and as long as the part can be sourced at their warehouse in Cincinatti I will be getting the new pipe installed next week. This is a replacement piece extending from the exhaust manifold to the axle-back exhaust, as the catalytic converter is welded directly to the pipe.

All you liftback owners, go get your replacement cat! I only smelled this after a short period of somewhat hard accelleration, but it doesn't mean the defect won't have negative effects for all cars over a period of time. Better safe than sorry, right?

Oh, and admins, you should probably sticky this.

When I went in to get mine swapped yesterday, they put it up on the lift and then couldn't find the part. They have to reorder it. At least I got a free tire rotation while it was up in the air.

isn't the US liftback tank about 11 gallons???? If so then I'm averageing about 300 miles a full tank. However I fill up right when the last bar starts to blink. How long can you drive with that bar blinking?

If 300 is all I get then I'mm averaging around 28 mpg. And I drive mainly freeway, and keep it below 70. wtf!!!! And I baby the thing.

should I be concerned and take it to the dealer?

violin: i see... sorry if this may sound to be a dumb question because i dunno how warranties work here in the US.

1. if you bought a used toyota from a private seller, can you claim warranty from any toyota dealer? Or better question is...are the warranties transferrable from previous owner to you? (assuming the mileage is below what toyota advertised for the tranny, body, etc etc).

2. if you bought a used toyota from a dealer, can you claim warranty from any toyota dealer not from where you bought it from?

Yes. The warranty is from Toyota - not an individual dealer. It doesn't matter how many times it is sold within the warrant period, assuming maintenance records are good.

Just called a few service departments in my area (Lower Mainland, BC - Canada), and they are not aware of any TSB for the Yaris Hatchback 2007+ related to the catalytic converter/sulfur smell.

I think it will take some pressuring on the service department before they look into it closely. The TSB does state that it will only warrant the replacement if there is a specific complaint about the sulfur smell, so it's not like a recall.

Thought I'd try :)
No sulfur smell yet.

Just tell them that it stinks, at least on my case they didn't do a test drive, and raise HELL if they call you a liar
