Sulfur Smell

I have read the TB on sulfur smell in 2006/07 HB. I have a 2008 that exhibits the same odor after deexceleration from highway speeds. At first I thought it was from a vehicle in front of me. Yesterday I was traveling 75 mph passing a truck and let off the gas and noticed the odor. The AC outside vent was closed, The windows were rolled up and there were no vehicles in front of me. There was no human injected fumes either. Is anyone experiencing this and is there any ideas on how the fumes are getting a closed vehicle?

at times we can smell the plastic manifold coming up from under the hood into the fresh air intake and through the vents of the cabin while climbing steep hills under a strain . Kind of smells like oil that gets on engine from forgetting to put oil cap back on or spilling of oil onto motor during oil change . When 1st bought a YARIS this happened when climbing a very steep hill . So pulled off to side of road thinking I had left oil cap off ( or loose ) after doing a oil change . Lifted the hood to find not to be the case , so followed the odor to the plastic manifold ( TUCAN SAM ) . Seems to be more present ( stronger ) when the car is newer .

Follow-up on sulfur order

I just got back from the local dealer. I Took my car in and explained the problem to the service advisor. He said they would have to duplicate the problem of sulfur odor. I printed out a copy to the TB, as recommended by other Yarisworld
responders. He read the TB and said when do you want to make an appointment to get it taken care of. Tomorrow 08:00 and it would take about an hour if they have the parts in stock. This only goes to prove that you need to take a copy of the TB with you. Will keep you informed.

I have finally heard from the dealer and Toyota approved the Cat swap on my 08 Yaris. Parts are on back order nation wide indicating there is a bigger problem than just with the 06 and 07 models.

The smell in my case has nothing to do with the heater. During deexcelleration the air in the car is filled with the smell of rotten eggs. It has to do with the Cat Converter.

My car has the smell when wialaing onto the highway in 2nd and third. My gas mileage is alos down to 33 from 38. I called toyota customer care and got a case number and they said the dealer would replace the exhaust system ( from the front header all the way to the rear muffler is in volved in this TSB). Th edealer said they couldnt duplicate the smell. I said I smell it periodically, and exhaust SHOULD NOT BE coming into the car when its moving 70 MPH! The TSB says replace it if the CUSTOMER complains about sulphur odor. They will do nothing. Must be too busy fixing gas pedals.

Hi- did you get it fixed yet ? and if you did have U noticed any improvement to power, sound or gas mileage? I guess it's the whole welded exhaust from the header exit to the muffler entrance that gets replaced. Expensive part!

Hi All,

Could you please direct me to the TSB? While I have not noticed the smell while driving, I have noticed the smell while the car sits idle and I am outside of the vehicle. (like clearing snow, getting something out of the hatch, etc.) I am in Canada if that makes a difference. I would really like to get this taken care of.

Thanks!

Most all exhaust will have some odor near the exhaust outside the car - or may be noticed whilst reversing into a spot with a side light open. This is not a problem - just an indication of how much sulphur there is in the fuel you are using. Yes, fuel is loaded with sulphur compounds. You will find no remedy with this TSB and waste time in agony at the dealer.
