Bendix return spring??? Shades of the 1930's!

Actually, this is a rather modern starter. For what it's worth, here's a diagram:

its sticking a little bit... I assumed it was a spring that pulls the gear back off the mechanism
after you let go of the key...Is it a clutch type thing nowadays??? I asked a starter guy
and he said replace the spring and 2 contacts ... he said he had seen some of these...

The starter does have a clutch. The starter solenoid (or magnet switch as the manual calls it) does have a return spring. It is the smaller cylindrical part piggybacked on the starter. That could be the spring that he's talking about. If it is weak or the plunger's rusty that could cause the starter to stay engaged for longer than it should.

OR

When the contacts wear a lot, the contacts arc and fuse together with the plunger copper ring briefly and causes it to stick. this would be the typical 'hit it with a hammer to unstick it' scenario

replace the plunger and contacts

call these guys, tell them your starter model, and they should be
able to source you a plunger and set of contacts

This kind of solenoid switch is generally not repairable - you replace the whole thing. The cap is crimped to the barrel - not designed to be serviced.

Examine the gear teeth on the flywheel - if they are chewed up, it can cause sticking as well.
